Just thought that I would throw this out to everyone in here. Has anyone been able to put up any first cutting hay this year without any rain? I went up to Chadron NE last sunday (about a 400 mile trip for me) and every hay field that I seen had been rained on and still waiting to bale. I got one field done just a 100 acre field but we had 4.50" of rain on it, took us about a week and a half to get it up. Just started yesterday on another field and stop after they were talking about getting this rain today and just as I am typing this now we are getting a good little shower. I wish I would have followed the weather a little bit close and never started. But I can't complain to much with all this rain our pastures look like they are in the best shape in years. At my place since May 23 we have had 11.50 " of rain, the last 3 years we would be lucky to get that in the whole year :!:

LOL we haven't had a problem with hay bein cut and rained on. We got ours baled even tho we had monumental cutter problems.

Now there's been no rain...so no more hay....and that is = a big headache that'll be ongoin until we either get some rain, or hafta buy hay.

Isn't nature a fickle lady! :D Around here lots of feeder hay is available as most 1st crop was down when the rains started. It's going for 60 to 75 a ton. But it sure is hard to holler too loud as the rain is welcome on the desert!

Dont get me wrong I love all the rain the we are getting, like I said all the pastures are looking really good, its just getting to the point of you cant guess when to start swathing or when to get into the fields to rake and start baleing. I wish I could send some of this rain to you guys that are needing it.

Just started raining here about 2 hours ago. HURRAY!!!
Heard reports from some neighbors that the hay they are getting is not worth spit.
We haven't laid anything down yet. The JD 4010 that we run the baler on is down for a engine rebuild. Parts problems.

Say another neighbor roading his baler somewhere this morning.

We haven't had a good rain in 8 weeks now. We haven't even cut our first hay yet because its none to cut its so thin. Could you please send some water south or better yet if you could rope the clouds I will come and pull it south.

We are a month away from cutting yet.
The bale wrapper we bought a few years back during a wet summer has paid for itself many times over. We don't stop unless it is actually raining and the feed inside the plastic is a lot better than black hay.

greekrch I am with you on the bale wrapper. I missed the end of may weather window for hay waiting for the new moco. We have had over 4 inches of rain in the last several days and the fields are getting soft so need to wait for warm sunning weather to start again.

we put up the entire 1st cutting and out of 600 acres, only 40 got rained on....first time in 4 years we got that much done on the first. usually end up with a LOT of rained on hay. hate to sound pompous, but i LOVE to hear Texas is dry....best money I ever made was during a Texas drought, those boys drive up with CASH.....

Started cutting yesterday afternoon with 1 week of good weather in the forecast. Good crop but the knife broke at dark and put an end to cutting until I stick the new one in on Monday morning.

Timothy heads are 3/4 emerged, orchard grass is mature, and the alfalfa, which is at early bloom stage, is showing a lot of weevil damage already. Very unusual for so early in the season. Not good.

Well I guess you will make good money this year to. If we don't get any rain I will be looking for hay.

Living in western Nebraska this has to be one of the wettest May/June's ever. We seem to get some rain about every night. My folks live 90 miles from me now and they haven't had near the rain we have and worry about it getting to dry while we sit here not having to run a piviot due to all the rain.

I've heard Chadron is getting about the same rain we have and it would be very flustrating trying to get hay up in any kind of shape with all the rain. Good luck with your endeavor.
