Hubby got a call from a neighbor wanting him to cut some grass mix hay on their place and to go shares on it.
Now he would be swathing, raking and baling the hay.

What would be a fair share for this hay?

We put up a lot of share hay, most years it is 60/40 in our favour. Last year when fuel was so high we went to a 65/35 split. For this the hay is cut, raked, baled and stacked. I keep track of each field whether good hay or rained on and share evenly on quality also. The two largest places we do sell their extra hay to us at market value.

we do lots of 50:50.
We cut and bale, share the raking if needed and neighbour trucks.
It is very nice to go from bales in the field one day to a stack in the yard one morning when you wake up.

Horseless no idea how much this field will produce.
They had a different guy cut, bale and haul it one year. No idea why they are not having him back.

Hubby was thinking of 60-40 in their favor. Thank you for the info I will pass it along to him.

We use 60-40. Works in the operators favor most years but the landowners favor others. I have been on both ends of this deal and think it is fair on both sides. I have found a good operator that is closer to my hay than I am and as long as he will do it he can have the job. I still put up the closer fields myself. This year feed is short. I counted 33 big rounds on a 100 acre field not far from here. Hope mine is better than that.

It's been 2/3 - 1/3 here for many years, last year because of the price of fuel many people were doing 3/4 - 1/4. Landowners bales are left in the field for the landowner to do as he likes with them as well.

2/3rd 1/3rd here a few get 3/4 1/4 I don't have any rented on shares all cash rent. I hate baleing hay that I don't feed it bothers the heck out of me.
