Heart Attack?

I have never had this happen to me before.

I had fed my horses hay and grain and after horse finished eating, I caught and saddled him. He was eager just as ever to load up and go check cows. We rode around the cows for nearly an hour checking calves and seeing that all was well. I than proceeded to make sure all the fence around the 100 acres was up and sturdy. We were at a good trot most of the time and needing to check him occassionally to keep from galloping. We got back to the corralls to where I keep my bulls, and with a new pup in training the dogs and I, a horseback were moving cattle around. One of the bulls bolted and my horse and I broke out after him got him turned around and headed in the right direction when my horse reared back and started to go down. I stayed on him thinking he slipped and would just get back up as other times on him or other horses. Welper he went all the way down and pinned my between him the ground and a bale feeder full of hay. He kicked 3 times gasped and died in less than a minute.

He was the best trained horse I have ever owned, only 16 yrs old. Healthy appetite, strong and muscular. Lots of spririt and go.

Do you think this might have been a Heart attack????
 
Could you call up your local vet and maybe do an autopsy or just get a professional opinion?


That's odd....but heart problem sounds like you issue for sure.

no RMUG...don't listen to BMR...I'm much closer and I know where you can get a real good replacement!!!! :wink: Seriously, sorry to hear about your horse, hope you didn't get hurt when he went down, but gcreek's right, in a perfect world, he went the best way possible
 
OK questions.
Was the chest swollen? Was the belly looking swollen and tight?
Most vets won't call it a "heart attack" it is a heart condition that causes the heart to fail. Don't ask me why that is just what they told me when I lost my first horse.
Was he really trying to do stuff?

I heard those Saskatchewan horses are so used to stepping in gopher holes that they CAN'T take four steps without stumbling. :lol: :P
 
Here's a "sticks horse" that might replace the one you lost.
Picture of a picture taken in L.A. in 1999, colt we raised and still own. Made the semi-finals out of a pack of nearly 200. Just another ranch horse now.
Oh, but vanity did cost a lot. :roll:

my sympathies also............had an old gelding do the same thing........my best friend is a vet and he said it was a heart attack.....again, sorry for your loss............
 
Sorry to hear about that,never thought of a horse having a heart attack,new one.Sounds like he put in a good days work before hand,bless him.With all due respect,you're lucky he did'nt take you with him,hittin' a head on the feeder :( It's hard to think about replacing one you're bonded with and works good for you,and all the work it takes to bring one along to the point of your boy,but there's an awful lot of ponies available these days.Good luck Pard.
 
That is a pretty rough deal. Sorry for your loss. I'd guess with the other folks that it was a heart attack, but I've also heard stories of blood worms causing the same havoc. Keep in mind those are stories, I don't know if that's possible or not.
 
Sorry for your loss and glad you are ok. Sounds like a heart attack to me. A horse in the area died like that in the roping arena last summer.
