Hey, I'm new to the forum as of today and pretty new to raising cattle. this March I'm expecting my second ever batch of calves to be born. Everyday brings something new that has to be learned and I always have lots of questions.
Our farm is just north of Seattle, Washington, and there isn't a whole lot of ranching going on in the area. I have to go far afield for some supplies as the feed stores around here cater more toward dogs, cats & horses than beef cattle.
I'm happy to find this forum, it offer's a sense that I'm not alone in this!
 
Welcome from LA (lower alabama) and good luck with your calves. What type of cattle and forage you y'all raise up around your neck of the woods?

We have wagyu cattle. Right now I have 26 pregnant cows, some bulls and the '07 calves. Prior to taking on this herd I had no cattle experience whatsoever, so it has been an experience! I'm enjoying it, tho, for the most part.
What do you raise?
 
You around Skagit or up higher? You raising dairy or beefers? Your right about stores catering to horse people...lol. I usually go to Laurel Feed when I make it up that far. Must be nice not having to feed as much hay......seeing as everything stays green year round on the wetside.
 
Hey, choclab, Ellensburg! That's nearly home turf! I love it over there and go riding uup around Teanaway as often as I can get away. Can't wait for the snow to disappear this year.
We raise beef cattle. It began in 2006 as a cow/calf program but it seems now I'm going to have some of my babies heading for the table. This is a stretch for me, leaning more toward the growing/nurturing side of things, but I'm told it has to be done.
What do you raise?
I'm hoping to be able to get supplies this year in Ellensburg. Do you have a favorite feed store there?
 
I raise Angus and run about 20 momma cows. we AI all we can turn the bull in on the rest. We cut hay and grow a little corn to feed the weaned calves in the fall. I try to over seed pastures with rye and ryegrass for some winter grazing.
I bet you have not seen my grand baby yet. Well here she is. :D

Alabama, that's got to be one of the best looking granddaughters I've ever seen. She's a cutie. How old is she? Is she your first grandchild?
I'm an honorary grandmother since my ex-husband's daughter just had a baby girl. I'm her grammy and she's adorable; she has me knitting up a storm already.
Did you grow those watermelons? I've tried growing some here along the south side of the house foundation, but haven't had any success even with the short seasom ones. Every now and then I can grow a nice cantaloupe, tho.
How many acres do you have? We have about 35 in pasture for the cattle, not really enough. I go thru a crazy amount of hay in the winter, but then when spring strikes the grass grows faster than the animals can graze it until August drought takes it away again. It's all fun. :-)

Ain't she wonderfull. she is 13.5 months now and a good bit biger than the picture. I can hardley catch her.
We did grow those watermellons and with no rain I might add. That is why they are so small.
We keep up about 150 acres in hay and pasture but some of that pasture is in trees.
When it use to rain I could get a cutting of hay off my pastures in mid summer but they have not been cut in 3 years now. And the hay fields are just making enough to make the winter. I sure miss the days of selling hay. It sure helps cover fertelizer cost. Maybe it will rain thei year.
 
Well, Alabama, I truly wish I could share our seasonal rains with the rest of the country. Better luck this year.
