Hello, all.

Welcome, and from what I 've already read, your gonna fit in with this bunch just fine.
Thanks, jersey lilly. Where'd you get your name from? You aren't a dairy farmer, are you? I grew up in Vermont when most of the dairy herds were Jerseys and I have a soft spot for them. Nothing wrong with holsteins, but those little brown cows with the big, liquid eyes are special.
I like taking photos, I'll try to get some loaded on photo bucket to share here.
PS: I love your quote.

Welcome Emma........................

Welcome to the mania - kinda a cross between the over the hill gang, the golden girls, and dukes of hazard on here sometimes! It's a good bunch of people and all share the everyday chuckholes.
Best of luck.

Wonderful! Hey, Mike, when you get a 93+ point vintage watermelon wine, let me know? I suspect it would be the perfect accompaniment for my Trifecta potato salad. You want me to start saving bottles for you?

I suspect that Mike has enough bottles.

Some how I can't see wine going with tater salad but I will try anything once. Well almost anything.

I have a very dry, but nutty yet fruity tasting "Turnip" wine that would compliment your tater salad tremendously.

Yes, save me some bottles please......Just make sure they have them screw-on tops.

They is a lot less trouble than them danged corks.

Emma,
I don't trail ride too much, I used to hit the sagebrush hills when I was working colts though.
Ellensburg hay is getting out of hand......friggin farmers think the stuff is made out of gold. The timothy hay is waaaay too spendy, which is ok, seeing as I only feed alfalfa. The basin guys have started growing timothy that is damn near as good as Ellensburg stuff......locals farmers barns are staying fuller for longer. I think it's funny. I have a buddy who works for a hay press and gets me 2 or 3 cutting alf for 100 bucks a ton. It doesn't last long at that price. The hay farmers will charge the hell out of us until late spring, when their barns still have hay in them and they need it gone for next seasons hay. I offer them half of what they originally want....they usually bite...lol. Who do you have deliver your hay?

Hi choclab, you're not kidding. When the previous farm manager left suddenly, almost right after we bought the cattle, and I inherited them and, eventually, the job, I went to the feed store I always bought horse hay from (best hay in the area) and they gave me the name of their hay dealer, Gene Cook.
Not knowing anything about keeping cattle alive I didn't want to scrimp on nutrition so I bought the best timothy and alfalfa I could find thru Gene. First winter (last year) went well, but prices this year are crazy! Quality seems to be slipping, too. I've been looking for alternatives, and people are always badgering me to feed local hay but it isn't good enough for my horses so I'm thinking it isn't good enough for these wildly expensive Wagyu.
I need to get a load of alfalfa now but am dreading it. I know I'm easy to take advantage of because of my inexperience. Sounds like I could take some negotiating lessons from you.
What's a hay press?

I would recomend that you buy hay right out of the field and go load it yourself. Or if you have to have it delivered then buy it when it is beeing cut. If you have to build a small barn to just hold hay it will be worth it. Buy more that you need for the first winter and then just refill the barn every summer. After a year or two and you get to know your supelier he will just fill your barn when it is convenient for him. This should save you money.
Back when it use to rain I would sell hay much cheaper in the summer but once i load and haul and store for the winter I have to get more for it. Hay is always cheaper in the summer when every body has it. But come winter most of it has been bought and supply is tighter.
