:??? THIS MAY BE A DUMB QUESTION BUT MY SISTER-IN-LAW BROUGHT HER HORSE OVER AND SAID SHE WAS PREGNANT. SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHEN FOR SURE THE COLT WILL BE HERE. IS THERE ANY WARNING SIGNS I COULD BE LOOKING FOR I'VE NEVER HAD A HORSE HAVE A COLT. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR IT'S STARTING TO GET COLD DOWN HERE AND I DON'T WANT HER TO DROP IT IN THE FIELD WITH NO PROTECTION. SHE WASN'T REAL HEALTHY WHEN THEY BROUGHT HER TO ME THE PASTURE SHE WAS IN WAS BEAR. SHE'S STARTING TO PUT ON WEIGHT NOW AND IT'S NOT JUST THE COLT. I CAN'T SEE HER RIBS ANYMORE. I KNOW IT'S SAD. BUT I'M DOING WHAT I CAN BEFORE SHE HAS THIS COLT MAYBE THEY WILL BE ALRIGHT. IF ANY BODY HAS SOME IDEAS I LIKE TO HEAR THEM.

When she gets close she'll bag up pretty hard. The key to the impending birth is usually when the bag gets kinda waxy looking. Then you better be ready for action probably within 48 to 72 hrs.

Check her every day at least once and make sure she doesn't have to depend on you for shelter if it starts.

3waycross, is right... She will get a real tight bag and the nipples will get a wax coating over them... Some of my mares would even have milk on there hindlegs.... Real heavy mares lay around alot so don't worry if the mare is lay down. I had one mare that would get real agitated a few hours before she foaled. Would break out into a sweat then I knew it was very close for her.... Once the mare has the foal you may want to dip the colts navel in iodine solution and make damn sure the mare has exspelled all the afterbirth... Take the afterbirth and lay it out on the ground and there should be two complete horns on the afterbirth.. One of my mares wouldn't exspell hers untill I left for awhile.. I made her nervous.. Also watch to see that the colt nurses.. And they do nurse alot.... And then about 7 to 10 or 14 days the colt will get diarrhea from the mare coming back into heat.......Good luck and please show us pictures of the baby when you can...... I love baby colts.......

Kathy...

I'm guessing you don't know what a "mare with wax" looks like. Below is a link to photos I posted of one of ours mares with wax last spring. I hope this helps...
