Haymaker I have never seen it this dry you mention the mesquites and the leaves, ours didn't put thorns on this year, I have never seen that- Kinda nice not as many flats

but badly need the rain
:-) :-)

Ain't there just some mesquite trees that don't put on thorns? There's one I know of, that never has any thorns, it's a big huge tree. Now the bushes in west texas, I've not ever seen one of those that didn't have thorns, and have seen years out there that they didnt have many leaves either. and no beans to speak of.

LOL Always guaged when spring was "here" by when the mesquites put on leaves when we lived out there. Had to relearn all that down here, now it's when the pecan trees and Hickory nut trees start buddin out. When they bud out usually means there won't be any more freezes.

We got 4/10's of an inch night before last.

Yeah,I dont miss those mesquite thorns either, and believe it or not......got 3/4 inch of rain early this morning, not much ,but it's a start hopefully we will get a little follow up and get some grazing before the first freeze...........good luck

I haven't heard of a mesquite without thorns
\but the ones in front of the house always had thorns and this year all the new branches have none
Glad you got some rain, we are still hurtin here, I was hopin that front was gonna bring us some.
but not this round

Whens your first freeze on average Haymaker? Ours is normally somewhere right around Thanksgivin....give or take a week or so.

And Wooooo Hooooo fer you, glad ya got 3/4......maybe it'll start a trend for ya.

Normally the first freeze in the Hill country is the 1st part of November, yup gotta good lil thunder storm thru here early this morning bout 2am,I went outside to make sure it was really raining, kinda nice standing in that ole rain again,Team Roper,I know how you feel ,seeing that rain that close and not getting a drop, been there dun that, just south of me got 5 inches yesterday evening in Boerne, north in Fredericksburg got a couple inches, and been raining east and west of me,I hate to admitt it but I think I learned some new cuss words watchin that rain miss me.............good luck
PS hang in there it will rain.

Around here we just plant, everybody just calls in "dustin em in"oats are fairly cheap so we just plant em,some of these ole boys wait for moisture, but it always seems to come at a time when something else needs done,so plant em deep enough so the birds and ants cant get em and pray for rain..............good luck

what do you think about wheat or rye instead of oats
pros and cons?

I like oats because the seed is cheaper, and with the weather in a dry pattern,if I plant that's the way I will go,if I felt better about rain chances,I would plant rye,it's been said you can put weight on a lactating cow with rye.
I guess it just depends on what you intend to do with it,I have a friend that plants a few hundred acres of oats every year,if he gets a stand, he buys stockers and if the weather holds he does pretty good..............good luck

thats how i feel and how I was raised
but i bought some wheat hay this year and am getting about a 13% protein which I think is pretty good

Yes I think they all make pretty good hay, depends on how you fertilize it,I really like rye grass, darn seed is so high tho and like I said if it dont rain it gets pricey,as you get nothing for your trouble, there is one that I really like called "fast grass" it is every thing the dealer says it is,if it rains..........good luck

well I am not taking any chances this year unless the rain starts
I can afford to loose some oats.

We are diggin post holes with an auger and it is not taking any sand out we have to go in with a shovel after the auger to remove the powder

Yeah I have some of that sand country too, bout 3 foot of sand then clay, makes fencing a chore,I always thought the ground was pretty good around Leming,I have a friend that has a place out there his name is Gary hendricks, you heard of him ?..............good luck

I cant remember that little town that is right on 35,I think it is just past Leming,I live about two miles East of Sisterdale, which is about 14 miles north of Boerne when Im here, hunting season is close ,so I will be back and forth between the Hill country and south Tx,when you get a chance PM me your phone # and I will try and stop some time............good luck

Still some optomistic folks around here it seems-- I watched my cousin seeding winter wheat for the last couple of days...Must be counting on some moisture coming in to get it to germinate- but I don't know- the fields I have right next to him have cracks 6" wide in them....

I talked to the seedhouse owner the other day and he said he hadn't cleaned a bushel of seed wheat yet this fall...Dry conditions, high fuel, fertilizer, and spray prices were not too condusive to anybody getting in a hurry to seed......Beside the fact that I don't think some have got over the shock of the loss they took this year....Be interesting to see how many Banks don't renew operating notes for next year...
