Comments: I am doing college report on starting a cattle ranch and was wondering how much it would cost to by 200 cows and find out how many bulls I would need. IF you can help me it will be greatly appreciated..

This is a quote from a web submission I got off of my website from a young gal in Wolf Point Montana. I thought I would post it on here and have everyone give her some expert advise. So all you cattle experts here's your chance to give your advice.

My advice would be probably be forget about buying the cows - lease your grass and hay ground out and don't look back. lol

There are quite a few enterprise budgets out there on the web that she could look at. I know Kansas State Univ. has a few published.

Other than that, she can look at current cattle prices and look at the futures market to decide how to put it all together.

These reports are pretty lame. I remember in college doing them. They look real good on paper, that's about it. Plus the professors that give these assignments don't know the business well enough to make it worth spending alot of time to fine tune the deal so it would actually work.

I would suggest she marry a cattle rancher with 200 cows and she'll get all the "bull" she needs :P

Plus........he would have a new "Heifer".

Cindy - I see you found the forum. Welcome

Your lucky if your mother is in a position to loan you money on a start in the cow business with grass to boot. Good luck and do your homework before you jump in.

My mom owns 1,700 acres and all I have to do is ask her for a loan and I am on my way, and yes it would be nice to have a rancher in my life!!

I have 200 cows. Bulls too! Please send me a picture.

Take one of the boat too!

One way to do it would be to buy 300 heifers breed them and keep 200 and sell 100. Give you some cash flow and a young cowherd to start with-good young productive cows are usually a bit overvalued to be quite honest. If you breed during the Wolf Point Rodeo you won't need many bulls because I'll come A'I really cheap for you-I like those working holidays to Montana lol.

hhhhmmm how about if everyone on this forum gave you 1 cow,lol cheap way to get started, there is alot of different breeds here that way you could decide which you like best, lol

No...marry the rich rancher is still the best option!!

Even is she divorces him she's bound to still come out WAY WAY ahead in the deal!!

I like the way Mrs Greg is thinking!!!

I ditto this except I'd rather see the land :D

I would say that Cindy should just keep up with this site and she will have all the ranchers in her life she needs........but with no attachments and she won't have to be checkin cows when it is below zero and blowin snow!
