Do you have feeding snow yet?

We have been on 1/2 feed for 5 days now. A rain last week on top of 9 inches of snow and rain again today were not very welcome. Lots of rustling left but it is crusting pretty bad.

Next year............

Aw heck gcreek, snow isn't necessarily the determining factor on feeding start dates around this place. Apparently we have poor genetics in this herd as they don't pick and browse well, we can't bale or swath graze because of the elk, we aren't organized (and don't have enough pasture) to bank much grass..... so we feed 200+ days per year. But that's okay, there's plenty of points about this country to offset those downsides
We've been on full rations for 3 weeks now. Fortunately we have lots of feed, and after the last liner load leaves here on Wed. the feed pile will look even larger.
We did get a good solid 2 months between the last bale baled and the first bale fed though

Well, we made 45 days from baler to unroller.

Snow started falling at 3:30 this afternoon after raining all day, weather-girl says we could get up to a foot here again.

Queen's puppies leaving you alone?

So far so good, don't know for how long. Luckily all cows are in and mostly accounted for. There was a couple came in marked up a little and spooky as hell, and a few calves didn't show up. Hard to say why. Lots of tracks around though, and a hunter reported seeing a pack of 11. He didn't shoot though because he didn't want to spook the deer.

Last year, a fellow that hunts in our area when he gets a draw watched 8 wolves chase a cow moose into a lake and keep here there for over an hour. He said four of them came within 50 yards of where he was sitting. He didn't shoot any because they looked "so beautiful".
I told him that if he planned on hunting around home again he had better change his game plan. This year he plunked two and has decided these will "look beautiful" on his wall.

We had a cow killed at our home place and another bitten up at our new place last week. I wonder what the "keepers of wildlife" expect us to do now that the short-manned predator program has been further watered down?

Sorry to hear about the loss and damage. The way I see it, the Queen can either ante up for the losses incurred by her pups, or she can turn a blind eye when the locals 'feed' the poor starving creatures.
Perhaps if they think the predator control programme is not worth it we need to drop off some dead and dying livestock on our local MLA's lawns.

I haven't got the wind or the inclination to jog 50 miles in a night Haymaker.
You could make a good living buying the good stuff in Mexico and rum-running it to BC.

It used to be we had an old friend from Montana that could buy the good stuff down there when he was visiting and bring it back with him. It was very effective and kept our wolf problems to a minimum.
Of course, at one time the game branch used to come out in a chopper and guns and take out whole packs when they became a problem.
Ahhh.... the good ole days.

Not me,I stay outa mexico, lotsa changes down there now, soon as you cross that Rio Grande, your life has depreciated, but if you are the adventurous type, nuthin like sittin in one of those catinas, reminds me of the days when there were'nt much law :D :D
good luck

Nahh I go up to colorado every year and stay in a t shirt all day long during the winter. I can handle it. Everybody that comes down here hates our winter. We wear insulators in the mornin and short sleeve shirts the rest of the day.

Hell I'd just sleep until noon then you could just go in a T-Shirt.

You are more than welcome for a visit anytime. You may go through withdrawal symptoms though as there isn't an indoor arena for 200 miles.

You guys up north need to close that door and keep that cold and snow up there...I've gotten spoiled by the November weather- and awoke to a skiff of snow- falling temps- and 40 mph NW winds...

About froze my rear off out fixing a hole in the fence the heifers had found last night....But did succeed in getting an evil bald faced b**** sorted in with some culls I wanted to sell and loaded and hauled to the sale barn....Only a 4 year old--and I was going to save her to sell in the bred sale next week with some other bred cows I'm going to sell-- but decided I wouldn't do that to even somebody I didn't like...Rather see her go to Mickie D's.....

I guess this cold and wind is supposed to stay with us a few days as it sweeps down thru the country and moves east...But the long range forecast is predicting temps back in the 30's and 40's by mid month.... :)

I kinda like it when the real winter weather shows up to stay. No more soggy wet days with mud on my boots, everything is dry and sunny. I find I can keep track of coats and gloves much better too
As long as it doesn't get too cold for too long, I sure wouldn't trade it for country that doesn't have 4 defined seasons.... especially one where it rains in Dec or Jan and it doesn't surprise anyone  ...... yuck!
Anyway, we'll keep the door closed OT, and you keep your wind right where it is!
