Got my Midwest Marketer today and see where you and Peach Blossom are selling at Valentine in Oct. I was wondering if you sell 'off the cow' or are the calves weaned? Are the two shots both in the fall or do you count the shots at branding as one of the shots? Hopes the prices hold and you have a very sucessful sale.

We sort the calves from the cows on the morning of the sale, then load them onto trucks and take them to Valentine which is sixty miles away. The calves will all have Pfizer fall pre-conditioning vaccinations, consisting of Bova-Shield Gold, Ultrabac 7/Somubac, One-shot pasteurella, and Dectomax pour-on. These shots are given about a month before we sell. Spring shots include Ultra-bac 7 and Bova-Shield Gold, as well as Synovex to both steers and heifers.

Better come to the sale and bid on them.

Do you implant all of your heifers or just the ones you are going to sell?

We implant all of our heifer calves, at branding time when they are about two months of age. We use Synovex C, and have done it for over twenty years with no ill results on breeding heifers. There might be one or two percent more open yearling heifers, but on the positive side, I think the heifers grow out better and have less calving problems because of the implant. This is just my experience and thoughts on the subject, with no scientific data to back this claim.
