high heat = dead critters

Madisonville broke and all time record high yesterday of 108 and a heat index of 115. People that have cut their hay fields in these temperatures are really taking a chance of losing their grasses. Soil temperatures over 105 will kill the grass roots. Its days like these that make you think about global warming is here.

We drove thru town, and there's a house that has about 3 acres with it, they'd perdy much scalped it. And you don't ever see a sprinkler any where on it. I made the comment to Mr Lilly, "That's aweful, it'll kill it cuttin it that short" That's why my lawn needs mowed really really bad.....but I"m not mowin it. As for pastures....we were lucky and got 4/10's night before last. The grass is still green in most areas.

Dang...that is a tad bit warm! We've made 95, but low humidity, so it doesn't seem that bad...and if the wind is blowing it's even better...Hang in there and KEEP COOL!

My neighbor admited that about 80% of the dead ones were black.....one more reason to run Herefords!

Probably 98% of the cattle in the feedlot were black.

If you had all Brahman you wouldn't have lost any of them. The ones we have are out grazing all day in 107-108 temperatures with high humdiity.

Cattle in a feedlot situation are jam packed together, and can't get enough air flow to cool their body temperature off. Only thing I can see that might help is puttin mister hoses above all the pens.

See, this all confirms what I've said all along..... that southern country isn't fit for man OR beast! Never heard of cows dying from low temps, but high temps can get pretty hard on things.
Sure hope it cools down for you folks soon. My heart goes out to those that are losing stock because of these conditions.
