Did anyone see this. We heard that he was the victim of a TV wrestling type "body slam". What a tragedy.

People in KOTA Territory have rallied around a high school athlete who was seriously injured in a wrestling match in Fort Pierre last weekend.

Hill City High School sophomore Dusty Swanson remains paralyzed from the chest down after suffering a spinal injury during a wrestling match Saturday. Swanson has undergone surgery at Rapid City Regional Hospital and is reportedly doing well.

Hill City Superintendent Mark Naugle says it's difficult to watch a student who's taken such an active role in the community suffer.

"It's really tough," Naugle said. "You worry about all of the 475 kids we have and it's awful hard to see one of your kids, one of your students, with that kind of injury. You just hope for the best for him and his family. That's all we can do right now."

Dusty will soon be transferred to the Craig Hospital in Denver, which specializes in spinal cord injuries.

Swanson's mother Andrea is a teacher at Hill City High School, where in one day, the faculty raised more than $1,000 to assist the family with Dusty's medical expenses. A fund was also set up by First Western Bank in Hill City. To donate, contact them at (605) 574-2531

A tragedy but not a body slam.
