Wish I was talking about the temps-- but its about 40 here today- was 50 yesterday....Supposed to cool back into the 20's-30's for a while which is fine with me-- allow some of this snow to melt off without a bunch of ice jams causing floods........

Is this good?

Sorry, we don't farm, so I haven't a clue. Hope it does you a heap of good, though! :D

Good for the farmers-- not good for the cattle feeders or cattle prices-- altho I'm seeing some optomism again with near $60 cull cows and $1400+ bred cows again selling in Miles City......
Be interesting to see how high these breds go as folks see green grass appearing in areas that haven't had it for awhile......

OOPS............

Guess we'd better be glad we got rid of Al's swine breeding stock a while back.......they were pretty expensive to feed last year!

About the only pure corn we use, is to feed whole corn to the older horses......saves a bunch of headaches having to float teeth every little while.

What kind of basis are you running out in your area Oldtimer? Around here it has gotten as low as .02 cents at the terminal.

Don't know-- I'm not a corn raiser....Only been watching it as it relates to cattle prices....Only corn around here is a couple of the feedlots put up silage.....

I do know Barley has gone up about $.35 cwt ($6.35) and oats is up $.12 ($3.12)...Wheat is pushing $5 a bushel around here....

I predict we will see the days of the stocker coming back again. Put the gains on with forage instead of grain. The hog people are already screaming about the price of corn.

I pity the folks feeding AccuRation.

The price of corn has been all the talk around here for the last month. There are gonna be thousands of acres to run cows on stalks next winter.

My wifes uncle loccked in 300 acres for $156/ ton. Now he's having a hard time finding seed. He also locked in 200 acres of seed wheat at $6.00 for DNS.

I am glad for that, but our prices for on cattle our looking to be a little lower. But heck, it's a crap shoot anymore?

Last September, I booked 30% DDG cake delivered in bulk for $180.25 per ton. Didn't book enough and got some in today that cost $229.75 per ton delivered. Not too bright on my part, as I should have booked all I would need to start with. :(

Might want to double check that barley price OT. Last time I checked here barley was $3.25.

US 1 Malt Barley US 2 Feed US 2
Harr/cwt Barley/cwt Oats/cwt
Billings Area na na
Golden Triangle 8.00 6.60-7.00
Great Falls Area 8.00 6.50-7.00
Northcentral Mt 6.50-7.00
Northeast Mt 8.00 6.35 3.12
Southeast Mt 6.29
Southwest Mt 6.75

Are you talking bushel or cwt?

With the price of corn now next winters feeding will be alot more interesting. We usually put up corn silage for the cows and mis it with hay. Made the decision to sell the corn and buy gluten or ddg's and feed with hay and straw. If I penciled it right feed costs should be alittle cheaper. Depending on the weather hope to even bale the cornstalks for feed and bedding. Like I said it is going to be interesting.

I would agree with you, on the cattle putting on more of the weight on grass, if the corn price stays up. I think that is actually good for the industry, as it keeps the mother cow #'s down because of the switch towards yearlings.

Boy, what would the price of calves be without the strong fat cattle market we have now. Anyone remember 95 or 96? We sold 650# steers for 70 cents/lb, and some heifer calves were bringing less than 50 cents that winter. :(

Probably was 96 Tap.. Corn got super hot that summer, only reason I remember was I worked at the board that summer.. 88 was god awful too from what people tell me because of the drought driving so many cattle to market and not having lots of feed for them....

Baling stalks is fine Angus guy.. Just hope the weather holds up for you.. That is what we did this year, would rather have a mix of straw and stalks as at least than you can spread iout your harvest window a bit better.
