Holistic Management

Just like I answered it. I realize that it is offensive to some people. But I am not sure why always. I can't really liken it to a person's finacial situation, just because I know several smaller outfits that are financially stable and know of several big outfitts that have been pissed away. I have always felt if you want to be successful you have to pattern yourself after successful people. If you don't ask someone details about their operation how do you know if what they are doing works. Heck I can go to the court house and find out how much land you pay taxes on and what type of land it is, then make my own assumptions as to how you operate. Myself, I would rather someone ask me so that they don't make assumptions.
My wife told me once that assumption is the mother of all screwups.

I agree. Some people just have no idea. When city folks ask and you give a vauge ansewr it seems your either embarassed about it or have something to hide. Thats how rumers are started about the ag buisness with town people. You not telling them they assume your doing so well you don't want anyone to know about it. As flying s said the numbers don't mean a lot its what you do with what you have. I as well have seen people make more with very little than some huge opperations.

I understand numbers are hard for people to release or tell but for people to respect and believe in something we need hard core facts and numbers. Thank you for telling us more.

I believe that if you are truly involved in HRM it is not a management tool but becomes a life style. It makes you more aware of how what you are doing effects everything around you. It is very satisfying as well as rewarding to feel like you are making a difference. When I say making a difference I mean most importantly living a Christian life, being a good spouse and parent, a steward of the land, a care giver of your animals, caring about your employees, being a good neighbor as well as an active member of your community. Set down and figure out how things will change for your operation if any one of these things disappears. It can change things for you drastically. People need to educate themselves and find out HRM may benefit them instead of listening to what the "experts" have to say about it.
One other class that is very beneficial to any operation is a Bud Williams stockmanship school. If you ever have an opportunity to go you should. I am not sure if Bud still puts on a class but Curt Pate does some and he is excellent.

I would like to thank everyone for there post and time. Flying S i have taken the bud williams schools and it is very good both the stock handling and marketing. I have enrolled my wife and I in a hrm school. My initial concern was the daily moves but if we set it up more like yours with weekly moves will be easier to implement.

Muddy how long ago has it been since you have been through the Bud Williams stockmanship? If you are a believer and have practiced what you learned the moves will not be as bad as one thinks. My wife and I have taken care of all of the cattle since I began using HRM practices. Once she was pregnant with our first she slowed down quite a bit, cutting it down to just me. It is a mindset just like anything else, if you set your mind to it, it will happen. I wish you luck, I think you will really enjoy the class.

Hello All and especially Flying S, I have been away for awhile and am just checking in. I hope I haven't missed too many of these type of posts. We are deciples of Pratts Ranching For Profit school and a couple of years in the Executive Link program. I have always been thinking that holistic management was the next step as we are doing most of what Flying S is talking about but need to immerse ourselves in further education to keep the thing headed in the right direction. We have made our mistakes but we have also had some tremendous successes and learning how to apply these tools to our particular piece of ground has been educational. When we first started doing things different here we were pretty passionate and often were called born again ranchers for our uncontained enthusiasm and hopefully aren't as irritating as we were in our freshman year. We have been humbled at times but we have also been asked about our successes and only hope to be able to explain things as easily as Flying S. It is people like them that open minds and help their friends and neighbors through their clear and simple explanations.
