Bernie Marcus, one of the founders of Home Depot, said the Home Depot miracle could not be reproduced today. In a recent interview, he was asked to identify the single biggest impediment to job growth. His answer? The U.S. government.

"The U.S. government. Having built a small business into a big one, I can tell you that today the impediments that the government imposes are impossible to deal with. Home Depot would never have succeeded if we'd tried to start it today. Every day you see rules and regulations from a group of Washington bureaucrats who know nothing about running a business. And I mean every day. It's become stifling."

Wyoming Republican Sen. John Barrasso in a memo handed out to the lawmakers said that the administration in July only has put in $9.5 billion in new regulatory costs by proposing 229 new rules and finalizing 379 rules. Among those he cited were EPA, healthcare reform, and financial regulatory reform rules.
