Police Thursday are seeking a woman accused of giving five people illegal silicone injections, saying that one victim who fell ill is not expected to live.
The five "customers" paid to take the injections in hopes of increasing their femininity by augmenting their lips, cheeks, hips and buttocks, police Lt. Kevin Rooney said.
Several hours after the party, two of them fell ill and began experiencing breathing problems, Rooney said. Paramedics took them to a hospital, where they were admitted in critical condition.
Two of the woman's five "patients" are in critical condition Thursday, and on life support, police say.
According to investigators, the suspect is believed to be an unlicensed medical practitioner from the Los Angeles area.
"Her business was done more by word of mouth," said SDPD Lt. Kevin Rooney. "She came down here to provide this service to the transgendered women."
Silicone injections are illegal unless given by a licensed physician. Additionally, the silicone must be encapsulated. It can cause serious health problems if it migrates to the lungs or other organs.
Police believe other party-goers may have received injections, and are now asking them to come forward with information.
