Here's F-R 552 Lad 20P the bull we leased to Genex-I hadn't seen him since April of 2006 so was looking forward to checking him out. Fraser's have him running with 50 cows and there were three on this afternoon so he wasn't into posing. Here's a pic of him in his working clothes-he moves like a cat.
 
When I was a kid, we had lots that looked like that. I still think a horned hereford bull and a longhorn will get the job done with less fuss and muss than any other breed. :-)

You did good NR, raisin' that one. :D
 
I wish I'd of raised him-I bought him from my good buddies Murray and Cam Fraser from Hussar, Alberta. Never seen grass that good in that country before they had 12 inches of rain fall in that country this spring-it's usually pretty darm dry there.
 
If that is Hussar, that is something else! I've never seen grass like that there, ever! Good looking bull NR. What is the black cow doing in a purebred herd?
 
NR, that's as good a Hereford as I've seen in a long time.

What were his Ultrasound stats?

Have there been any calves harvested from him yet?

Only reason I'm asking is that a friend of mine was looking for a Hereford last year to go on some Brahma's and couldn't find one with a reasonable Ribeye EPD or actual Ribeye.

His calves got terrible "yield grades" a few years back and was looking to improve.
 
He wasn't done himself and so far just 4H calves were scanned but there's was pretty good both would of been choice under the US system I can't recall offhand what their estimated lean yield was. Your friend could call Murray Fraser at 403 787-2341 to find out more about them. For what it's worth his calves look like they should have good muscling. I won't be putting any calves of his on feed till next year.DJL- Fraser's run a hundred or so commercial cows as well as 200 or so purebred Angus cows. As far as I'm concerned every purebred breeder should have some commercial cattle. Yes that's Hussar-not your typical scene there is it lol.
 
He calved very well here-my heifers aren't real big and they calved out on grass-never saw one born in fact. I'm sure if he gets used in enougfh different places there will be some troubles but I think he'd be as good a choice for a heifer bull as any. The calves grow on pretty well for being born that small-looking forward to calving his daughters-they should be his strong suit.

Don't be so cheap Jigs. Just order a few straws from him. NR would probably come down and AI them for you if you threw in a bed to sleep in and some liquid refreshments.

I hear he likes them mountains and brush in Kansas. :D
 
Boy, you sure have a dandy there Northern. I think any of us would be proud to call him ours.

Congrats again, and I hope you make some cash off semen sales. If we didn't have such a wonderful market for our straight Red replacement heifers, I'd campaign to use him.

Mine calve out on grass so don't get many weighed-just the big dead ones and we never had any of those. I can check what he averaged at Fraser's though. They sure weren't very big off our two year old heifers. They calved on the other side of the muskkeg for three weeks so never saw them at all in that time-as far as I know we never lost any calves out there.

Yeah, if you don't count taking out eyes as a fuss. When I worked at the Wichita Livestock market we would get 8 to 10 cancer eye cows every day. That was 40 years ago. I just helped my neighbor pen and load one of his hereford bulls last week for the same reason. Now, I think herefords have a lot to offer, but the seedstock breeders in my opinion have been asleep in not correcting a few problems with the breed and as a result have lost a huge chunk of their market share.
 
well, I don't AI here... so I guess I better wait and buy a bull calf off of you NR. keep me in mind!

worst part of visiting Kansas from Canada is the drive through those dad gum Husker Fans !
