Horned vs. Polled

Oh, a lot of Black cows sold as commercial Angus seem to throw that odd horned calf from time to time. We would get 5-10 percent pop out horned when we ran the horned Maine Anjou Bulls... Of course, that is probably because the majority of the black herd in this country has something horned back 3-5 generations, be it a black baldy base or something else.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Yeah Baby!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least I'm not trying to give myself the scours to be able to wear a thong!!!

katrina....have you got green eyes????

nortexsook, You need both horn genes from the cow and the bull to through a scurr....
I've AIed from certain angus bulls and got scurrs.... I know my angus have something way back. but true angus shouldn't.....
Illrancher, I agree, amazing what will throw a scurr......

You're correct in what will throw a scur, however, the "scur" and "horn" genes are two different genes (in European breeds.)

See this from North Carolina State...

TTB

Oh the scurs are annoying but I have seen purebred, papered Angus throw actual horns as well so who knows.. I suppose random chance of a jumped fence but I don't think so.. Not a big deal for the most part.. Scurs are their own world of stange.. A cow/heifer has to be homozygous for scurs and hetero for polled/horned in order to show scurs while a bull can be hetero for scurs and still show them if he is hetero polled.. At least that is how I remember it and I freely admit that my memory is no good.

I don't wory about the horned thing, if they have horns and we need to take them off we can do it when we give 1st shots to the calves or when we are cutting/2nd shots. Not a big deal. We used mostly polled bulls but I do have two horned Tarentaise bulls roaming the grounds for at least one more breeding season..

how far are you from Leola, south Dakota or Mobridge

I am not too far from there. About 60 miles south of leola and about 80 se of Mobridge. Similar country though. Lots of potholes with grass mixed in, but there is some decent farm ground just east of me IF you like that sort of thing.

Katrina, no offense taken either. I have been called much worse.
It reminds me of my wifes roomate, (girlfriend at the time), in college, she used to call me that. I even get mail addressed that way to me.

I was down at arnold Bros. Simmentals the day after a big snowfall but it looked like it might be good country under the whitestuff. I'll leave the good farmland to the farmers.
