Horse for Daughter?

We all understand what you feel about your daughter and her wanting a horse and the relationship that will follow......BUT.....BUT....BUT...don't get in hurry.


You may feel the pressure from her ' wanting'....but we all wanted things when kids and we had to wait a bit and lo and behold...we usually got a better deal in the end.

She's heard NO before... :wink:

You drive a car before you buy it, a tractor or truck. Try on shoes and clothes also!!!
 
We are going back so I can step up on him this week.

I have been listening to what everyone is saying and I agree with it.
I did find a "good" kids horse a few years back. Nice quarter horse, retired due to a bowed tendon. He was 11 yo.
Son rode this horse bareback with a halter and a lead rope. He went to the owners private auction and sold for $3500.00
I was willing to pay it, but the husband wasn't.
THAT was the kids horse I wanted.
 
Although I do agree with all the advice you have gotten so far, I think it is very important to have seen another child riding the horse. I would like to have seen her ride it with a saddle and out of the round pen however. There are alot of horses that are 'dead broke' with an adult on but a completley different horse with a kid on them. If you know the lady and trust her that counts for alot. JMO
 
Okay Faster Horses.
I went back there today. Went out to the pen where the horse is kept, he caught pretty easily. Didn't try to turn away or run away.
Took him to the hitching post brushed him out. Only time he even moved was when the horse on the end knocked the saddle into an empty stock tank.
The lady took him into the round pen and mounted up. She rode him around going both directions and then getting him into a trot.
Took him outside and rode him around a hay field. Brought him back and I got on him in the round pen.

Now getting on a strange horse gets me pretty tense. Now this horse stood there and when I was ready he moved out at a slow pace. Rode him for quite awhile in the pen. No I didn't ride him outside of the pen.

He responded very well. He neck reins one way, but does need some work on the other side. Now a person who is not nervous or tense gets on him he really does step out and he can sure cover some ground.

Sorry but I do like him.
 
It's perfectly fine to enjoy being a horseback! :D While I agree that safety is always important i still feel that allowing a kid the room they need to grow is even more important. I got knocked off a pony at two by a low limb. Nobody felt worse than my Mom but she dusted me off and put me back on. And I've been there ever since. Maybe it's cause i've spent my entire life around them, but i trust horses more than most people. They will give your best when ya know how to ask it of them. And I hope that you and your daughter and whatever horse ya get, have lots of happy days!

Guess you gotta go with your " guts" on this one then. Once you get him home....get him comfortable and you comfortable with him on your own turf.....ride him again.

I think you did say that the seller would take it back if something ' didnt' work out'.......

Will she ride with a helmet till everyone gets used to everyone else? I now they look goofy and prob feel even goofier but they sure have saved a lot of kids.

Yes Kola she will ride with a helmet.
Now I've seen this horse 3 times and I am not having any of the misgivings I had with one of the other horses we bought.

Heck, H rides with a helmet. :lol:

After bulls scrambled his brains too many times he's gotten concerned with his photogenic qualities. Never know when Hollywood might call.

My "helmet" is made by Atwood and is a low crowned Hereford! :P Don't hate me because i'm beautiful! :D Back to the horse......... CONGRATS! I think helmets and vests and wrapping her in bubble wrap is sure your choice. But I think around a billion kids grew up riding horses without those things and the vast majority didn't know any better! :wink: They just were allowed to learn and love and bond and become one with one of the neatest animals God created! Knocking a little hide off now and again is part of life. Horses make life a lot more worth living! :D Dents and all! :D
 
No need to tell me you're sorry because you like the horse.
My only caution was that someone ride him and see how he is.

If you're happy, I'm happy. But it's best to find out all you can,
FIRST. I'm happy you did that.

There's kind of an old saying that goes with buying anything, "let the
buyer beware." Where your child is concerned you can't be too
careful. Now you have ridden the horse, you have seen the horse
ridden and you are at peace about the whole thing. That's all
I was concerned about.

SO, GOOD LUCK!!! And I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

Kids and horses have been a big part of my life. Nothing beats a
happy kid on a sweet horse!! :D

Traded 2 yearling steers for him. Figured it wasn't a bad deal. :D

A lot of ground work is ahead of us for both the daughter and the horse. :D
 
Nicky got him home today. Put him in a pen by himself to let him get used to the place and then we are going to put him with our other 3 horses.
Loaded just fine and calmly walked out of the trailer.
Only time he jumped was when I lead him through one pen to a different one, we walked through our yearling heifers and he didn't see the yearling laying next to the bale feeder, until she jumped up. Surprised him because he was looking at our bulls in front of him. :D
 
Congrats on your new horse!!Lots of riding makes a good horseman/woman,and lots of wet saddle blankets will make a good horse.Make sure you have a saddle pal to go out with,the first few times.Have fun.
