Horse hair hat bands

Hello Folks,

Just wondering if anyone knows of somebody that would make me a custom made horse hair hat band for a cowboy hat. I would like to provide the horse hair and can do so to the makers specifications. Or any other western item using real horse hair. Or if anyone has instructions for making them please post. Please, Please, Please post your comments, suggestions and contacts.

Call Montana State Prison--Deer Lodge, Montana.... They have several inmates over there working with horsehair- braiding and hitching- that do some beautiful work they sell in the Prison Gift Shop....

Used to be a lot of old Deer Lodge alumni around that could do that kind of work- but now about all the main prison gets is dopers and murderers that never see the light of day for quite a spell....

Are you wanting braided work or hitched?

If you want to do it yourself, I would start with braiding. I have looked a bit online for how to instructions but haven't had any luck. I purchased a book from Hitching Post Supply "Braiding with Horsehair" by Diane Gadway some years back when I started. Not too expensive either.

If you want your hair work hitched, I would find someone that will do it for you. Hitching takes lots and lots of time and patience to learn. It is worth the time because you can create some fine looking usable art.

Sounds like OT knows where there's a tech school teaching it. Course tuition may be off putting. OT I've told lotsa fellows abouut your putting convicts on log chains - you're a hero.
