Horse processing = full employment at Canadian plant

America's loss appears to be Canada's gain when it comes to horse slaughter. At least, that's true for employees of a small packing plant in Saskatchewan.

Processing horses for meat has been all but eliminated in the U.S. Just one American plant, a facility in Dekalb, Illinois, is slaughtering horses. And that's happening only under protection of a court order while the plant's parent company, Cavel International, appeals a recent Illinois state law banning horse slaughter.

But in Wolseley, a small town in southern Saskatchewan, the Natural Valley Farms packing plant is picking up the slack. According to an article in the Regina Leader-Post, the slaughter facility is now running near 100% capacity because it's processing horses for export to Europe. The move has allowed the plant to recall all of its workers who had been laid-off.

According to the Leader-Post, horse slaughter isn't the hot-button issue in Canada that it is in the U.S., especially if it's done humanely. Moreover, the article points out one cultural difference between the U.S. and Canada is that horse meat is a common menu item in restaurants in Quebec.

The horse kill is a short term contract to commence in 10 to 14 days, it gives the plant EU acess to any species, as it becomes a EU approved plant thus when this run of horses are over it opens the EU to UTM beef. And on top of that the profit margins for a custom kill is excellent. It is a big win for the producer owners of the plant as well it short cuts acess to the EU for canadian UTM beef killed and processed at the plant. This is all win for those of us involved in NVF. The horse meat market will help make connections within foreign govenments pertaining to trade in meat. As for consumption of horse meat in canada it is less than one half of one percent slaughtered in canada. The main export markets are the EU and Asia.

I've proposed this before but for some reason it gets ignored or chuckled at but now theres a good reason for the exchange. We will trade Quebec for Alaska, then you Americans can reopen the slaughter plants because the horse meat would have a market, feedin all them Quebecois :-)

actually i think it is a fair trade

Keep in mind, if you take Quebec then Newfoundland has to go with it. It's a package deal. Quebec's going away present, so to speak.
