Horse Trainer Stories

Having once had a colt at a cutting horse trainer, I wonder how many others have a story. The man we hired did everything I paid him for and our colt brought money home from 3 of 4 shows we sent him to. I will always wonder how far he could have gone had the well not run short of water.

An old friend told me a story of a trainer he knew in the 70's that took a lady's Trail Horse for a month to get him over his fear of tires in the Trail Classes.
A while later our friend and the trainer were visiting and our friend asked how the lady's horse had come along with the tire phobia.

The trainer said that he was a little embarrassed to take her money as all he had done was lock the horse in a box stall with 15 or so tires in it also.
Never saddled the horse and got paid to boot.

No wonder they shoot coyotes.

I've sent horses to be trained. Raised colts had a stud etc etc etc. These are all reasons I'll pay good money for a good broke horse.

My Dad sent a good paint filly to a reputable trainer. I took over for Dad in the horse breaking division but had just started a new job and had no time to start a horse the right way. So Dad took her to "town". 4 days later the guy has a bad wreck on another horse and breaks him up really bad. He calls Dad and tells him about his troubles. He asked if it would be O.K. if a young lady assistant of his who was learning the ropes started dad's filly. We almost brought her home, but decided to go ahead. That mare turned out simply perfect. And that young lady now has a very successful training operation of her own. The other guy healed up fine in case you wondered. :wink:

Sometimes its easier to find a good broke horse than a good honest trainer - I prefer dealing with the first rather than the latter. One of the boys told me about a horse ratings place ratemyhorsepro.com guess we don't have to rely on the shake of the hand only anymore.

There's also a website called Trackmyhorse.com....but it only works if the owner pays a fee to join as well as a monthly fee, and then has to enter the information on the horse and keep it updated every race. The track my horse one is for Barrel horses. Really good concept...but I think it's a bit expensive for what it is and you having to do all the maintenance on info yourself. Your just paying to use their program....when in all reality you could keep the records yourself.

Never sent a horse to a trainer..........but that ole gray of mine sure needs to learn some manners,he had 2 of my deer hunters hemmed up between their pickup saturday morning,luckily they had a cell phone to call the house.
When i got down there sure enuff he had em pinned between their pickups his ole ears pinned back............seems like he found their deer corn in the back of their truck and when they tried to chase him off he got after them :roll:
