Hi all:

For a while now, most of you know I've been "operating" under the name of MYT Farms. However, after looking at being a Co., an Inc., and a LLC., I think LLC will best serve my needs as a company. Now, how the heck do I go about registering the name "MYT Farms, LLC"? What are the costs? Is there an age limit? Thanks to all.

Normally you have to be of the age of majority to form a corporation or an LLC or LLP.

In Texas with the new Franchise Tax law there is no advantage to being an LLC anymore.

Check with a fellow Coloradian for better local information.

IMO for a minor there is probably no advantage to forming a LLC--
but you can register an assumed business name with your state and do business under MYT Farms

Thanks Lonecowboy. So, how do most folks go about registering a company name?

It's not very hard, my dad's done it. Just went down to the county courthouse and filled out a form, they'll search the company name to make sure it's not already taken and you pay a fee, not sure how much, shouldn't be a ton though.

I'm from minnesota, and all I had to do is go on the sec. of state website, fill out the application, print it and sing it, scan it back into the computer and e-mail it back to them with an e-cheak for $160. Within a few day's I was registered. Then I had to file for a new tax i.d. number, after I recieved that I went to the i.r.s. website and downloaded w-9 s and filled new ones out and sent them to my contractors.

Thanks OD/NT. I think I'm just gonna register a business name for now. Then, when I have lots of capital, I might become an LLC. Not very likely with ranching being my chosen profession.

Just a slightly educated guess, but my opinion is that an LLC may not be necessary for an individual? It s useful for various members of a family in a loose partnership, to own the land in common, with each owning their own cattle with some form of a lease-back on the pasture, and/or as a means of gradual transfer of ownership of the land to 'the next generation(s) and/or for estate planning purposes.

It also gives you the strong advantage that you can never loose more then you put into the business. It's keeping your personal assets seperate and protected.

LLC...Limited Liability Company
That's why I use it.
