I guess you fellow do not know near as much about the US agriculture as you think you do. In the 1970s and early 80s all or college professors, ag spokemen and the media told us to expand, to use our assets in land, cattle etc. and get bigger and more efficient. Then then the interest rates went out of sight. Just a couple of days ago I talked to a man who agreed that that was what had happened to him. 19% interest, you know who fast that builds up. He said he farmed, had 2 center pivits, when things hit the fan they were worth less than 1/2 of their value. Now he is selling insurance.

To me, those who argue that we have a unified beef industry are some of the biggest liars of them all. Things were going well again in the early 1990s, than when the bottom fell out of the market we were told it was because we were over-producing, still our big brother "partners" bent over backward to import and farther depress our markets. I do not see eye to eye with R-calf, but can very well see why so many people join them. We US cattle producers can produce all the beef we need to fill our domestic market, just give us the prices to allow us to do it.

Clarence, did anyone forge your or his signature on a bank loan? If, not I believe if an error was made it was of one's own doing. I too remember the period well.

I also remember the early 1990's. That was an expansionary period of the cattle cycle. Beef production was at its cyclical low in 1990 and annual fed cattle prices reached their peak that year. Prices turned lower following a severe winter for feeding in 1992-93. Inventories peaked at 103.5 million head in 1996 then herd liquidation began, a result of severe drought in Texas. Cow slaughter that year was 7.2 million in contrast to 2004 at 5.1 million head. The imports you are bitching about were more than offset by exports. Yes Clarence, net imports declined if you were paying attention to all the facts. Now, what were you complaining about and whom do you blame; remind me.

Agman, did you conveniently forget that Pres. Carter embargoed Ag. products to Russia (the market that USA ag was expanding to fill) undermining our credibility as a reliable provider...and Brazil and Arg. (with our help) were poised and ready to take those markets, which they did. Ag lending institutions and banks were more than ready to lend a high percentage of (overly inflated) capital asset value with the urging of the government(Nixon/Ford). Carter's move started the ball rolling that collapsed the whole system. My brothers and I faced off foreclosure, paid six figures on interest, and took 10 years to recover working +100 hour weeks. I remember the times well...and you should watch out telling part of the story...SH will call you a liar.

Agman: "... in 1996 then herd liquidation began, a result of severe drought in Texas."

The drought didn't stop at the border, Mexico was also liquidating and shipping cattle north per NAFTA, adding to the over supply.

Two half truths in one post...we are waiting SH...Oh, that's right, Agman has nothing to do with R-CALF, so you don't have a problem here. Now what's that word you use all the time? :???: :???: :???:

It seems to me your reference to Carter was not the decade being discussed. Regrading NAFTA, yes Mexico had a drought and imports of live cattle increased because of the drought, not NAFTA. Imports declined the following year; can we credit NAFTA? Your R-Calf heritage remains with you - half-fact equals half knowledge. Now what about those half-truths you accussed me of?!!!!!

MRJ:
A unified beef industry should operate like a large family. In a family, we may argue with each other, we will compete with each other, but in the end if an outsider steps we we will all stick together and defend each other.
The beef industry has not really acted that way. It has been more like what you see in a few cases, where the arrogant big brother steps in and says it all belongs to me.

It is true that we have exchanged breeding stock with Canada, and some with Mexico. Mainly because they had less strigent regulations on importing from some of the Europein Countries. Many of our so called exotic breed were first introduced in Canada. At the same time, how many herd in the Us can you name that has live cattle that are of Canadian origin. I am not afraid to eat Canadian beef, nor am I really afraid we would introduce more BSE here by importing Canadian cattle, but still, there is to many unknowns out there.

RobertMac, only the fanatical religious right nutbags refer to the 'loony left'. I would take the left any day over the dangerous people like you and Bush and his insane handlers who use their fake moral high ground to justify reams of injustices and criminal acts.
America has become a threat to world stability and is indeed on a track that will restrict the rights of everyone, including fools like you.[/b]

Agman:
I am not bitching, but I see the realties. I did not sign my name to a note that charged plus 15% interest. No matter what some of our self proclaimed experts told us, while at that time I didn't pay much attention to return on investment or return on assets, I could not see any way that the return for the ag producer could pay that kind of interest.

Actually for me, I benefited by the 1980s farm crisis, it presented opportunities that may not have been there otherwise. But I will never say it was good. Just in my neighborhood and surrounding communities, there was stress, attempted suicide, divorce, foreeclosures, bank failures, and whole families who resorted to drinking to escape. Although we have mostly recovered, there was damage to the community that will never be repaired.

One thing I hope we learned from it is to not listen to those self-proclaimed experts, who like to offer advise, but leave to risk to someone else. There are no silver bullets.

When I look back to the history of my family, I believe they came into this area to make homesteads, not to get rich quick, but they believed that land ownership ment security.

Whoever you are you need to get a life and clue reagarding what this President is doing both on the domestic front and leading the world against terrorism. I too believe that the extreme right is dangerous but you seem to have your directions somewhat confused.

President Carter's 1980 grain embargo has little affected Soviet food supplies and has destroyed U.S. illusions of "food power." The President suspended delivery of all U.S. grain sales (8M + tons guaranteed under terms of a 1975 bilateral agreement) to the U.S.S.R. in order to punish the Soviet Union for its military occupation of Afghanistan. ..."Lessons of the Grain Embargo" by Robert L. Paarlberg

A quick goggle search to jog your memory. :D

NAFTA was the open door...I think we agree on that.

You are obviously confused...I haven't been to church on a regular basis in over 30 years...the looney left defines themselves as looney...you make that case for me better than I can!!!   If I had the choice to live among 'extreme Christians' or 'extreme Islamist'...well, I'd rather not lose my head. :P

agman, I am not confused at all. I see very clearly what the US is doing. It is you poor brainwashed americans that are in the dark. Right from grade 1 you are fed the revisionist history created by your government to build the base for a lifetime of thought manipulation. You probably watch FOX news as well? Need I say more?

You need not say anymore. Your level of knowledge or total lack thereof and political bias is very clear for everyone to see. Don't get anymore confused by the facts than you already are. Get a life.

agman, Yes, make sure to watch FOX tonight, better yet, turn it on right now! It will make you feel better. It will reassure you that those doubts about what you've been taught are unfounded. They will tell you that America is great and can do no wrong, they will tell you how evil Islam is and how everyone is out to get you.
Yes, retreat into that fantasy world, and feel good that you are an American!!! :D :D :D :D [/b]

I don't have to retreat from a fool such as yourself. If you fail to understand the struggle for democracy versus totalitarianism. I guess you think Islam and and its association to centuries of sustained poverty and repression is the way to live. What planet are you from?

Why did so many in Iraq turn out to vote. Why are so many willing to risk their lives daily in the struggle for freedom? It is only because of those who have risked their lives for freedom that fools like you are allowed to spew your nonsense.

I have never stated that America was perfect. However, I would like you to name any country of form of government that has brought so much freedom and improved standard of living to so many.

Nope, I've already got more than my money's worth from my dues. There has been a success that can't be taken away. The USDA and AMI have been served notice that they're being watched it won't be business as usual. They're going to have to do their poaching at night.

You are just one more misinformed R-Calfer. That is the truth, as hard as it may be for you to swallow.
