I took my Great Uncle and my son (James) ice fishing the other day. I am pretty much a fair weather fisherman, it was 40 degrees with no wind, you couldn't ask for a better afternoon. James caught his first fish, the only thing I did was bait his hook and help him get him out of the water, he is 23 months old. What a blast. He was pretty excited until the fish started flopping around, then he was just sure he was going to get bit. I caught a nice bass and James wanted to get in on the action. He was just fine until I got the fish out of the ice then he got a little scared and backed up and fell in my other hole. Determined not to miss out we went back to the pickup and stripped him down and wrapped him up in some blankets and back out to the ice we went. It has been great to take some time to do some things with my family this winter.

Video cameras especially.

We have drawers full of old video of our kids growing up. My wife is currently transferring the old VHS to DVD, watching a lot of it as it is being done. Most of this has not been viewed since it was taken. It is really amazing to see.

Of course the focus is on the kids, grandparents now deceased, etc. but little extras in the background that are long gone and forgotten, pop up like it was yesterday.

For example: a foal born to a favorite old mare that has been long gone for many years; an historic old barn on a neighboring ranch (that we now own) which caved in more than a decade ago; Old furnishings that we had forgotten about, etc.

These old memories are priceless!

Good for you! The little dude will always remember things like that! Me and my boy need to spend a day of two this winter on the ice as well. I'll bet it wouldn't take much arm twisting to get Grandpa to go with us! :D
