If you were buying a new 22LR.

I'm a lever-gun fan so it would be a Winchester 9422. I have a 9422 Magnum and I love it.It's a little pricey for gophers though.
Second choice would be any decent quality single shot with a long barrel.
My youngest has a semi-auto with two 15 shot clips.......he can go through a whole brick of shells in no time!!!!!  Lucky thing shells are way cheaper now than when I was a kid. :)

Ruger 10-22

1-dependable and accurate
2-light, short, and easy to get out the truck window
3-accessories galore
4-good price
5-can put 3 slugs in a coyote before Tim can find his lever

6- Abilty to waste 100's of rounds thinking that that 2nd,3rd.....16th running shot will be more accurate than the 1st standing shot.

I've never once been unable to find my "lever"!!!! :D :D  Out here on the praire you don't go coyote hunting with a .22 LR and get very many.

Ty has a Ruger 10/22 with a stainless steel barrel and a synthetic stock-it's a workhorse been dropped in sloughs etc -never jams. A good lever action is a fun gun to shoot also-those 10/22 are very accurate for being semi-auto's. If you want the most accuracy go with a Kimber with a match grade barrel but for a ranch .22 a 10/22 or a lever are both fine.

I keep one on the tractor while breaking ground and haying. They come out to catch rats, etc. For some reason they are not afraid of the tractor and are like shooting fish in a barrel and you don't have to drag them off.

:D :D Just raggin'ya Mike. I've had a couple 10-22's over the years and they were just fine. Even shot the odd coyote with them!!! :D
I've had coyotes follow the tractor or swather or whatever around for hours as well.....and up close too. Of course I never had a bullet thrower along at the time.....

I'll throw my 2 cents worth in here now. I have a 10/22 I think we have clips for about 55 shots. My son can empty them pretty fast as well. I don't really like the semi auto altho I know to treat every gun as it is loaded but the auto really is. The thing i have against the lever is the tube magazine, pain to load and unload when you do most of your shooting from behind glass.
I have a old Remington Scoremaster open sights fun to shoot and test your skills. A Ruger that's take a pile of gopher and I bought a older Lakefield for $100 and put a free scope on it and carry it in the truck all the time.
I am thinking about a botl action stainless with synthetic stock and a clip. Just have to find the gun and the money.
Keep posting guys I want to hear more.

Big Muddy RAncher -my buddy has a real good bolt action .22 for sale-he bought it brand new but he bought an 8mm so now raising some cash. I think it's a Kimber but not sure-Ian @ 236-5999 is his number. I could deliver it when I come down to pick up some mineral. Ian's a good guy-the gun will be as he says it is.

If you can find a used Ruger model 77/22 you will have a good gun, they should'nt be that hard to find Ruger made quite a few in the eighties............good luck

The CZ's on the market have been proven to be very accurate, a little pricey, but well worth the cost. sw bought one for Montana Cowgurl, she is a dead-eye on that one. It's a single lever 7 shot, been looking for another 7 shot magazine so she can have it handy to kill all those gophers  :D :D Haven't found one yet, they seem to be in great demand

The most accurate .22 we have around here is a single shot Cooey(winchester) Model 750. I bought it brand new when I was about 10 or 12 years old for $23 whole dollars.Paid for by snaring gophers with baler twine for 5 cents per tail bounty!!!
It has the long 28 or 30 inch barrel with Monte Carlo stock and rabbits engraved on the handgrips. I put a Weaver 4X scope on it about 25 years ago and my oldest son(17)is now the proud owner.
I wouldn't even want to guess how many rounds it has fired but I think that 30 to 50 thousand would be a conservative estimate.
Devin(my kid) can regularly pick off gophers at 100 plus yards with it !!!
The middle kid(15 yrs) has a model 39 Winchester single shot that belonged to my grandfather and he is pretty deadly with that as well. :D :D :D

My fav.gopher killing machine is a Browning L.A,used it today, beat the kids  Heard those Rugars are good never used one, stuck on the oldtimer!

I've got a marlin semi that I like but I would go for the winchester model 94 lever action because of the value that would be gained by it from the discontinuing of them, plenty pricey though. I just got a Colt 22 long New Frontier that I love. I use a model 94 pre 64 lever Winchester 30-30 for range rodents when I don't use my 22.
I have a couple friends that have lever action 22 Henry's that they say are real good and pretty cheap, one you wouldn't be real heart broke to bang around a little bit and it's durable enough to take.

hey BMR that gun my neighbor hasd is CZ Synthetic Stock with a Stainless Steel barrel-he wants $500. THe gun without a scope is worth more than that and this one is like new.

Those CZ guns are VERY accurate, I cannot believe, but they are. Would never hesitate to buy another, but my Marlin 66 and my Winchester 94 in a 22 Magnum do the job for me. I learned how to shoot with an Ithica 22 single shot, had to pay for my own ammo, did the same for my kids, learn how to shoot, don't waste a shot, guess that is why John boy is in Hawaii at sniper school. The luck of the draw I guess, only two people left Califorinia for sniper school. He learned it shooting gophers

Sounds like a deal but my air compressor just pooped and I think I got to buy a new one. I will think about it and let you know. After I sighted in the old Lakefeild and the ruger that my son was supposed to do I am hitting everything in sight. (Almost)

Speaking of gophers-my son the redneck snared one with a skate lace outside Boston Pizza in Swift Current when he was at that tryout camp-had a few people looking out the window. It was catch and release though lol.

For a cheap gopher gun a ruger 10/22 is hard to beat.
One advantage is with a scope and a 30 shot clip is that you can walk the bullets to the gopher.
Example say the gopher is about 150 yards away but your not sure about the range.
Aim high and watch to see where the bullet hits. If you are still low or if your windage is off just aim higher and more to the side on your next shot. Keep doing this until you connect. This works great with the semi automatic 10/22 and a big clip and a scope!
A 22/250 is pretty hard to beat for serious gopher shooting. A rimfire doesnt even compare!
But a 10/22 is cheap and your not spending all your time reloading shells. The problem is those rimfires are just not accurate past a 100 yards and the wind really messes with those light slow bullets.
