Been looking on here for a while, thought I'd ask a question I don't have an answer to. Found a cow this afternoon dehydrated, running a bad fever, and carrying a massive infection causing bleeding from everywhere. This is a dadgum mystery to me. No respritory cough, nose was caked with mucus though. Caught her, gave her 10cc's of Micotil, turned her loose. Don't expect her to make it through tonight. Seems to be an isolated case. Anyone seen similar conditions and had it diagnosed?

p.s. Great board with smart people. I'll post lighter stuff in the future.

I can't really help you out much with the diagnosis but I would recommend if she dies have the vet post her. I know it seems like a waste spending money on a dead cow but if god forbid you have a severe out break of whatever it is at least you will be a step ahead of it.

Dad had a bad run of pneumonia over thanksgiving and didnt think it was worth posting the first dead calf, after the fourth dead calf it was about over, turns out he should have switched antibiotics found that out after posting the last dead calf, now that was wasted money. :x

What I have seen in feeders with IBR is that they will often have runny eyes, a cough, and be dumpy for a couple of days, but the IBR isn't what kills them. It works more by running the calf down and paving the way for the big bacterial infections like haemophilus and pasteurella to move in.

It doesn't usually kill a big cow though, so I'd have her looked at by a vet right away to make sure it isn't something else. If she's got IBR, that's nasty. An outbreak of IBR can cause an abortion storm in the herd. That can get expensive.

Let us know what happens.

Luke....you better get a vet in there. Do you do business thru a local stock barn? Was this cow raised on your place? If she's been brought in and then turned up sick...you could have BIG problems.

Cow's status quo, her symptoms appear to be consistent with IBR. We haven't bought a cow in about 9 years, only new stock are bulls bought through Univ of Florida's bull test sale. I'd find it hard to believe it came from there, that program is ran to the 9's. So here i am scratching my head. I'm beginning vaccinations on monday, i'll let y'all know of further developments.

Assuming that it is IBR that you're dealing with and assuming that your cow had developed a secondary bacterial infection that will even respond to antibiotics...

I don't think you should expect much improvement if you only gave her 10 cc's of Micotil. Was that a typo?

Hmmm...I'm surprised the vet didn't take samples to satisfy his own questions. But to each his own I suppose.

Here we post each and every ' suspicious' death.....worth the money to be sure cause when symptoms do show up again...sometimes it's too late by then!

Good luck and keep a watchful eye!!
