I am new to the bull session so I don't know if you have covered this topic but....

I bought some heifers that were AI'd to the ABS stud, Image Maker (angus). The calves came easy and are growing really well. I am concerned if anybody has kept his daughters and how were their dispositions. I see he has a really low Docility Epd. I know the epd is new but just curious about real world experience with his cows. If they have poor dispostions then they are automatically culled no matter now nice they might look this fall.

Thanks

Howdy

sorry, i can't speak for Image Maker as far as the disposition. i have heard they can get pretty big, but i haven't seen any myself.

anyways, welcome to Ranchers. :)

I have worked with a couple hundred Image Maker daughters over the last few years (neighbor AIed all his heifers to him for two years)-- and they definitely are quite a bit more flighty and high headed than the Lead Ons and In Focus sired heifers he also used.....(Both those bulls are great for siring quiet progeny from what I've seen)....

The Image Makers kind of remind me of the New Design 878's which were a little on the high headed/flighty/snorty side too....

I have my own theroy about bulls names. Image and Image Maker were big Chianina many years ago. Future Direction (which direction is he going etc)
Welcome to the board I am reltive new also and have enjoyed the more practical approach several of the members have.

It's kind of like getting a letter in the mail, the more it says "URGENT" or "CONFIDENTIAL," the less likely I am to open it. In other words, my B.S. detector goes off. :-)

I'm thinking that the Program bull out of the Hinman genetic lineup would be a very interesting option, above Image Maker. It looks like he has the calving ease, carcass, growth and disposition. Yeah, it sounds too good to be true, but he'd be interesting to try out. Heck, no reason to be a big doubter unless I have more solid evidence. Anybody ever use this bull?

Thanks for the tips on Image Maker. I wasn't planning on keeping the daughters out of him, now I am sure I won't. It's a shame too because their mothers are out of Jorgenson stock and are wonderful. Never had Jorgenson genetics before but really like what I see here. Excellent mothers for being 1st calf heifers.

We just bought a yearling Program bull this spring to put on cows. Seems to have the growth. I got an EPD update on him
BW: 1.6 WW EPD:62 YW EPD: 110

Funny when we bought him in the sale his epd's in the catalog were about 10 points lower. Still pretty high for us but came in a fairly moderate sized package. Too bad I won't know who his claves will be because he will breed with 7 other bulls in the same pasture. Sure seems quiet dispostion wise. When I branded him he didn't even jump in the chute.

I calved 10 Image Maker heifers this year and none have been a problem since the day they were born here. Pretty laid back, almost too much when trying to sort them. We also bought an Image Maker bull to use on the commercial heifers and he doesn't have any disposition issues. Honestly, I have never seen an Image Maker that had any attitude issues.

I have heard from Nissen's that Program is very laid back. They halter broke him as an older bull and took him to Denver a few years ago. I bought some cows last year that were bred to a son of Program. I was not real impressed with the calves, but that's not to say it is because of their gradsire Program. They were late calvers, but still didn't grow well.

Welcome to the party Howdy1!

The few Image Maker progeny I have seen were yearling bulls. They struck me as a bit tall and narrow. But probably not a large enough sample to draw any firm conclusions.

i made a comment earlier about those cattle getting big, but i think you are right Dylan, they might just be tall and narrow. i know proabably not all of them, but that is kinda the way Image Maker himself is made.

Since I started this mess I just remembered a friend of mine used Image Maker so I called him. In his opinion they got to be big and tall (not deep bodied) but as far as dispostion they were really quiet. He only runs around 50-60 cows so it is easier to keep a nice gentle herd.

I have thought about it and I believe just about any bull can sire some calves with good dispositions and some with poor dispositions. Some of it comes down to how and how often they are handled by people. Just my little opinion
