I serve on the committe that organizes an events day for the fair. We have the usual roping events, wild cow milking, wild horse race, barrels, hangmans race ,rawhide drag, and a bucket race(musical chairs on horse back).
This is not a ranch rodeo, we do that a different night.
Does anyone have any new ideas for us?
We have had stick horse cutting, irrigators team penning, and chicken roping(did not go over big).
We also have steer riding for juniors and mutton busting for the wee ones.
Any new ideas??

How bout a timed obstacle course. Four or five "chores" that you would do on Horseback. eg. opening pen and cutting "sicky out"(don't forget to close the gate), roping log and dragging to a specific spot, etc.

Rescue Race - one rider and one passenger. Passenger stands on a barrel at the far end of the arena and the other one hasta ride down there and pick the other one up and carry them back across a line at the front side of the arena.

The kids here do a potato race...........one barrel sat up at the far end with a bucket on top filled with potatos. Run down there get a tater, and then about half way back there's a metal trash can, you hafta throw your tater in the trash can, then back across the timer line. (It's not as easy as it looks)

Well Wild Cow Race is fun-especially getting them saddled-or Cow Dressing-you have to try and get a pair of jeans on an old cow.or you could turn all the timed event cattle loose in the parking lot and all the cowboys horses loose and see if anybody can get a horse caught to round the cattle up-that would truly mimic a common day ranch occurance.

Diaper race or old fart depends race.......
One person rides down to another person at the end of the arena and puts a diaper or depends on the other person, then both ride double back across the finish line....

Dollar ride.
Ride bareback in a circle like pleasure class walk, trot and canter with a dollar bill between you and your horse...Say like between your thiegh and the horses back or just sit on it....... Winner is the last one with the dollar still in place........

Ribbon roping. Draw for parteners......
Ribbon race.. Get craepe paper and cut so long and two people on horses run a pattern with at least one turn, one person ducks under the ribbon and the fastest time wins. Or have more than one pattern, say the two slowest times are elimenated and the rest move on to a harder pattern.
Run down to the end of the arena, dress a calf and have to pack it back on your horse.
How about a plain ash bad obsticale coarse... Anything goes as long as it's kinda safe.........

Don't know if this is your hangman's event, They take a front end loader or gin poles hanging as far over the arena fence as possible, then hang a tire. teams ride double on a horse, the driver rides under the tire and the not driver hangs on the tire, the driver then has to go arroud a barrel and ride back under the hanger and pick him up then the 2 cross a line for a time. Its surprising how this event descriminates against those that don't ride their ponys all week. Ofcourse them that are riding their Dad's old broke steady have a leg up.

We have the wild steer saddling in our show here. It is funny, and a little dangerous too if you dont have team members that pay attention lol, my oldest still wears the scars where they wrapped him with the rope..They have a team of 3 and have to saddle the steer across the line and come back across and first one across is the winner.

Our ribbon roping here is where they put a ribbon on calves tail, and one ropes the calf, the roper has to hold it and a runner has to get the ribbon and run back to the finish line. Normally here it is young men that do the roping and gals that run, but here lately we have as many girl ropers as boys...lol.

Sounds like you have a lot of fun with your fair like we do here, our semi fun rodeo is done with teams. It is just youth that does it and they are 4-H and FFA competing against school.

Ya'll have fun...and send pictures.

In the potatoe races we had years ago, we would put five potatoes together on the ground. THe racers would ride down, spear one with a sharpened stick, ride back and put it in a bucket. It's mighty hard to get a bucket to stay upright when knocking a potatoe into it, off a stick, usually while on the move.

Boot race.

Everyone takes off thier boots (or just one boot, however you want to do it). The boots are put in a pile, or lined up by pairs (however wild you want to get). The riders are behind a line and they have to run down, get off their horse, get their boots on, get on the horse and run
back across the finish line.

A tamer way to do it, is to do it one at a time. Fastest time wins of course. But they have to have their own boots on and if the horse gets away it is a penalty or DQ.

You can make it as wild or as tame as you want. It is a fun one to watch.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot.

THE BEER BARREL RACE. The rider turns the first two barrels, gets off at the 3rd barrel, drinks a beer, remounts and runs back across the finish line. HINT:  This isn't a good event for youngsters or teenagers...

We have that as part of our 4H horse show, but we call it "Ride-a-Buck". We have to keep it between our thigh and the horse. It's really hard when you can't keep your horse at a constant speed, so you have to change your body position to keep from falling off. That's when it's easy to lose the dollar lol.

We do a trailer race
park a truck and trailer at the far end of the arena and have the rider run down to the trailer on their horse and dismount load the horse in the trailer and close the gate and latch it run around the truck on foot and open the trailer retreive the horse get back on and run across the finish line where they started from

Bareback on a Dollar-part of the bill has to show at all times, last one in gets the loot everyone else lost to put them out.

Egg on a Spoon-uncooked egg (still in the shell) on an eating spoon, walk, trot, lope........last one with their egg wins.

Egg Race-uncooked egg still in shell in mouth, then same thing........last one with their egg wins.

Flag Race-Flag placed in a bucket of sand on a barrel at opposite end of arena, rider goes around barrel and takes flag out, rides back across finish line.

Walk, Trot, Lead-rider walks from point A to point B, trots back to point A, gets off and leads to point B. Fastest time wins.

Used to do a lot of fun type things at our 4-H horse shows, but that was many moons past, and I can't remember many of them. Sorry.
