More plants. I think most people will know what this is. I an curious on how widespread it is throughout the country though.

Milk Vetch? Boy it is hard to put the guess out in case we are out to lunch. :( If it is, it is popular with those of us that don't like to add expensive chemical fertilizer.

Whomever guessed leadplant is right. I always thought that its presence was a good indicator of range that hadn't been continuosly overgrazed.

I believe that is it's correct name. If you google either it's common name of "lead plant" or it's scientific name of Amorpha canescens you'll find out a wealth of info. about it.

It's a legume and from what I see and remember, a member of the bean family.

It's a very cool plant. When I get my photos uploaded I'll share.

Hope all is well with you all.

I can't find it in any of my books so it might not be very common here.

Can't find it in any of my research either. We do have some wild peas and a lot of guys put peas with their oats. As for your leadplant, not in this desert. :D Thanks for introducing me to a new plant.

I've got an interesting story about lead plant. My cousins have loads of it in their pastures and they heard that the seed was worth about $40 per pound so their extended family which includes about 25 kids and uncles and aunts went to work hand stripping lead plant. They could get about a pound an hour per person and ended up with about 500# and they did sell it for $4o just like the guy had said he would pay. $20,000 for some hard work and initiative, but well worth it.

Prairie Shoestring is another common name for leadplant. Leadplant is a desirable range plant. It is a legume and a nitrogen fixer. It likes calcium rich soil and is often found on rocky hills or hills with rock outcropings. It can be a surce of protein for grazing animals. In my experience yearlings gain better in pastures where there is leadplant. It is a sort of woody plant, but besids that it may also have some sort of a limiter as cattle seldem graze it to the ground. It leaves out late in the spring, perhaps that prevents it from being over grazed early in the season. It has a strong root system and is quite drought resistant.
