Iodine in short supply

I guess the government has made it hard for cattlemen to get iodine even though the cattle industry has used iodine for like a hundred years.

Sodium iodide for treating lumpy jaw intraveneously is in short supply this year. The vet said it works as an antibiotic and he may use LA200 in the future.

Also I like to put powdered iodine in with my powdered salt and mineral to help prevent lumpy jaw and foot rot, and I guess that could be in short supply too. I see Zinpro is supposed to help prevent foot rot and lameness.

I already use Trace Mineralized salt, but it could use more iodine in it.

Ditto what FH said.

If you are on a limited budget but think you need more iodine than what is in regular trace mineral salt, then you need a TM salt with EDDI. The iodine content of EDDI is 4x that of regular TM salt.

Right now I'm feeding regular TM salt with magnesium oxide added for grass tetany prevention. I'm mixing 12:1 NaCl:MgO and the cows seem to consume it pretty well. A 50 lb bag of MgO goes a long ways mixing at this ratio and costs about $25.

One of the reasons iodine is so hard to get is that it is used in the illicit drug industry. A few years ago a real "non-cattleman" looking individual stopped at a local livestock supply store and purchased a twenty pound container of iodine. It took about every dollar bill that the guy had to pay for his purchase. Being savvy and on-the-stick, the clerk had the foresight to get the license number of the vehicle and reported the incident to law enforcement. Anyway the outcome was that a major drug ring in Colorado was busted over the deal.

My feed dealer managed to get me a 25-lb. pail of organic iodine for just $35.00 from Consumers Supply.

Purina/Land O'Lakes minerals has Late Season mineral or Fescue mineral which has greater amounts of iodine and zinc in it, but you might have to special order it. You might as well just buy the salt and mineral sold locally and add iodine, vitamin A-D-E and Zin Pro to it.

wonder what the shelf life of iodine is,have a quart in the barn.
good luck
I had some bottles for treating lumpy jaw and they had an expiration date on them. We quit IVing ourselves because it was hard to get the vein and they got expired but we used them anyway because the vet was out of it.

The last time I stopped at Walco in Greeley I asked for a gallon of 7% iodine. the kid looked at me like a "canner cow with a calf". The manager came out and questioned me. He must have figured out I wouldn't know Meth from Heroine, but I do know a little about cattle, he told the clerk to sell it to me. @

I talked to a local vet lately and he said he can now get all the liquid sodium iodide he wants at one vet supply house but he can't get any at another vet supply house. So maybe it is back in the pipeline.

Been doing some research on what iodine protects your thyroid from radiation. Table salt isn't supposed to be enough. Might nibble some organic iodide I bought for the cattle. Painting yourself with tincture of iodine might be beneficial. Got plenty of that.

All the internet stores are sold out of Potassium Iodide. It is a "must" to protect the thyroid in case of nuclear radiation. Because Radioactive Iodine is one of the common radioactive elements released. Your thyroid can not distinguish radioactive iodine from regular iodine and tries to use it to produce thyroid hormone T1-T2-T3 and T-4. This conglomeration of radioactive material in such a small place (your thyroid gland) can open you up for radioactive poisoning or more likely thyroid cancer down the road.

I am sure the same is true in livestock physiology as well.

i'd suggest reading thr label and comparing whar you're getting to whats in a good mineral.

pretty good odds what you got is reddish--and that's from iron oxide, commonly known as 'rust'---this'll do 2 things for ya---1,tie up the copper
2. make ya thnk you're doing somethng productive.

not a put down---been there, done it

I nibbled some of my iodine powder. Tastes like salt. Mainly salt and mineral oil. Only 4.57% iodine. At least it won't kill you to eat it, but it's mostly salt.

If you're trying to protect yourself from radiation, from what I understand it won't do you any good unless you get exposed to it today. If the radiation comes tomorrow, you need to take it tomorrow.

The 20-grain organic iodine powder is 4.57% Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide. Then there's 40-grain organic iodine powder.

Here are some links about iodine being absorbed through the skin.

I reckon it wouldn't hurt to start increasing your iodine level.

I reckon I'm just gonna take my regular multi vitamin/mineral pill that has 100% DV of iodine and worry about other stuff.
