Syrian rebels who would later join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIS, were trained in 2012 by U.S. instructors working at a secret base in Jordan, according to informed Jordanian officials.

The officials said dozens of future ISIS members were trained at the time as part of covert aid to the insurgents targeting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The officials said the training was not meant to be used for any future campaign in Iraq.

Obama Proposes $500 Million to Aid Syrian Rebels
Program to Train and Equip Moderate Opposition Would Expand U.S. Role in Civil War

There is something particularly concerning about the "masked, sociopathic murderers" who fight for the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), writes former state department official Andrew G Doran for the National Review.

Some of them, he says, are Western citizens who have travelled to Syria to fight President Bashar Assad's government - and have passports or other immigration paperwork that would allow them to return to their home countries whenever they want.

In fact, he says, citing the Daily Beast's Greg Sargent, perhaps a dozen are already in the US.

Mr Doran writes that the Syrian revolution, in which the US has sided with those seeking to topple Mr Assad, has taken the focus away from the real enemy: al-Qaeda.

"If these Islamist veterans of the Syrian conflict succeed in pulling off a terrorist attack against the United States, the problem with America's policy in Syria will come into focus immediately," he says.

He says US idealism is to blame for our current Syrian policy.

"Unable or unwilling to distinguish between mere Machiavellian evil (Assad) and globally ambitious sociopaths (ISIS), America may have left itself vulnerable," he writes.

There may not be an ISIS at all had Buckwheat not released the leader in 2009...................

Hope and Change. Good thing Buckwheat thinks the Muslim call to morning prayer is so beautiful, he must want all of us to experience it on a daily basis.

I think this says it all....

"Unable or unwilling to distinguish between mere Machiavellian evil (Assad) and globally ambitious sociopaths (ISIS), America may have left itself vulnerable,"

Obama has been so hell bent on toppling governments and dictators, but was unable to the unforeseen consequences.. anarchy

but that is nothing new when it comes to liberals..

BTW wouldn't that make Obama an anarchist?

The inconsistency of his action versus his prior statement indicates that he simply doesn't care how he achieves his agenda. His vision of legal restraints is consistent with the anarchist Occupy philosophy, including, "[t]he refusal to accept the legitimacy of the existing legal order."

Obama creating anarchy at home and abroad since 2009

And who trained Bin Laden????

:? :? :? :? :?

This is nothing new. Just a continuation of American foreign policy that has been in place for a long time now.

So if what you say is true, do you think ignoring it now is the answer.
"the guy down the street committed a robbery so we just ignore robberies"
Maybe a few more "assault rifles staring them in the face would be a better solution than giving up

Knowing what we know now.. we should not have gotten involved in Afghanistan and left that s---hole to Russia..

Background

The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was formed after the Saur Revolution on April 27, 1978. The government was one with a pro-poor, pro-farmer and socialistic agenda. It had close relations with the Soviet Union. On December 5, 1978, a friendship treaty was signed between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan. On July 3, 1979, United States President Jimmy Carter signed the first directive for covert financial aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul.

Since 1947, Afghanistan had been under the influence of the Soviet government and received large amounts of aid, economic assistance, military equipment training and military hardware from the Soviet Union.

The economic assistance and aid had been provided to Afghanistan as early as 1919, shortly after the Russian Revolution and when the regime was facing the Russian Civil War. Provisions were given in the form of small arms, ammunition, a few aircraft, and (according to debated Soviet sources) a million gold rubles to support the resistance during the Third Anglo-Afghan War. In 1942, the USSR again moved to strengthen the Afghan Armed Forces, by providing small arms and aircraft, and establishing training centers in Tashkent (Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic). Soviet-Afghan military cooperation began on a regular basis in 1956, and further agreements were made in the 1970s, which saw the USSR send advisers and specialists. The Soviet Union built an extensive amount of infrastructure, notably giving assistance building the Kabul University, Polytechnical institutes, hospitals, civilian infrastructure, power plants, and local schools. During the 1980s, Soviets established the universities in Blakhe, Herate, Takhar, Nangarhar and Fariyab provinces. Russian faculty soon joined the universities, teaching Afghan students in Russian language proficiency.

In 1978, after witnessing India's nuclear test, Smiling Buddha, President Daud Khan initiated a military buildup to counter Pakistan's armed forces and Iranian military influence in Afghan politics. A final pre-war treaty, signed in December 1978, allowed the PDPA to call upon the Soviet Union for military support.[44]

by the end of 1980, out of the 80,000 soldiers strong Afghan Army, more than half had either deserted or joined the rebels.

seems like history is repeating itself...

well worth reading...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_war_in_Afghanistan

On December 27, 1979, 700 Soviet troops dressed in Afghan uniforms, including KGB and GRU special forces officers from the Alpha Group and Zenith Group, occupied major governmental, military and media buildings in Kabul, including their primary target – the Tajbeg Presidential Palace.

The Soviet military command at Termez, Uzbek SSR, announced on Radio Kabul that Afghanistan had been liberated from Amin's rule. According to the Soviet Politburo they were complying with the 1978 Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Good Neighborliness

So sow it again?

Where are all the 20/20 hindsighters like OT who, once it was clear that Iraq would turn into a clusterfark, started whining....."couldn't Bush see this would happen.....at least Hussein had control over the savages", etc etc etc.

Same could be said of Assad. Just leave him (Assad) the fark alone and let him take care of them the way he knows best. The Russians were right, Obama was playing golf.

Trouble is they "Tinker" and like many "Tinkerers" they don't really know what they are doing. Arming this group and arming that group and then they turn on you. Just like the back yard of a guy with to many "Projects" and nothing gets done. It's a real junkyard.

bin laden was a "freedom fighter" that was used as an asset in the defense against communism.

The Arab spring was used to aid known terrorists in their attempt to bring radical Islam to the masses after overthrowing elected governments of numerous countries.

both were successful operations, it would seem.

History repeating...Clinton showed a weak response to terrorists and the consequence was a much stronger Al Queda and 911.

Bush was a war monger...

Now obama is showing a weak response to terrorists and the consequence will be a much stronger ISIS

the next Republican President will be a war monger...

Mexico, hell! They're heeeeere!

Wait until 9/11. The sh!t will hit the fan. The US can burn while OT's boy golfs. I'm so glad my daughter is back in class after spending all summer in DC.
