I haven't posted a lot lately, but did see this thread and it caught my attention.
Since I particpate in other internet forums (not related to ranching) and also enjoy political banter, I do have my views about forum moderation.
Certainly the owners of a given site have the right to control content if they so choose, and they also have the right to appoint those they wish to moderate. Having said that, I believe that being too heavy-handed in one direction or the other stifles debate, the exchange of ideas, and often results in the exact opposite goal of establishing the site in the first place.....that being participation.
My personal experience here was to join in August or September of last year. I started out posting in the ranchers forum with photos and a brief description of my place in Venezuela. Response was immediate, friendly, and I felt welcomed.
Within a day or so though, I wandered over to the poltical forum and made the mistake of expressing my general views about politics and actually challenged someone on the logic of a particular view or two. I later learned that person was a moderator. Now, I'm accustomed to getting my chops busted in political forums, but what was dished out this time really caught me by surprise.
I was first accused of being another poster, an alt in other words, and when I protesed, it was demanded that I prove who I was or else I was obviously a liar  . I then stupidly sent a PM to someone who I felt had expressed sympathy and understanding for something I had mentioned in a thread, and I was then accused of stalking, using someone's personal tradegy against them...and the list goes on and on. The whole thing was really bizarre.
And it didn't stop there. The entire "coje culo", as we say in Venezuela, followed me back to the ranchers forum where my political views were interjected into threads that otherwise had no political overtone whatsoever.
I think those who were calling me a liar, asking for proof that I was not another poster, and proof that I actually lived and ranched in Venezuela finally accepted that I probably was not what they accused me of being. I don't really know though as no one ever contacted me and said something like, "hey I screwed up man, sorry for being such a dick with a new member".
Anyway, I personally think moderators make good moderators when they can check their politics at the door, otherwise, they shouldn't be moderating political forums. Just sayin'.
