Good morning to all my amigos here on ranchers. Thought I'd update ya as to our hopeful cow deal. It isn't going to happen. And while I am surely disappointed, I am in good spirits and know another deal will come along that does work.

To begin with, this deal had a lot of red flags. There is a huge family fight between brothers that is plumb ugly. The one selling the cows and permit has his elderly parents blessing to do so but the other brother wont accept that. The sheriff has been involved and its a really sad situation. If I didn't learn anything else from this deal its HOW IMPORTANT HAVING YOUR ESTATE PLANNING DONE RIGHT IS!!! So much heartache and bitterness can be avoided by communication and planning. 2nd red flag was the cattle aren't very good quality wise. Lots of issues with age and the lack of a constituent vaccination program as well as low quality bulls being run for years. The Forest Service requires that the cattle bought be run on the permit for 1 year from purchase. It would be a big risk for some of those old sisters to make another trip through a calendar. And after I met with the Forest Service ranger, I learned there is a huge can of worms coming soon because of the sage grouse problem. I was lead to believe that the permit would most likely be cut or worse, depending on what happens with the sage grouse listing as endangered.

And lastly, (without sounding like I am being preachy I hope) the Good Lord made it quite clear to me that I would be doing this deal without His approval. I don't know what he has planned for our family, but this wasn't it. I have felt very peaceful every since we made our decision to pass. That doesn't mean we wont expand our operation on the leased ground we currently have or stop looking for a permit in other areas. That double recessive gene I still proudly carry for the love of all things cattle, will continue to keep me finding ways to continue in this most noble of vocations!!! But this deal was not meant to be. I thought I owed ya an update and a sincere thank you for you thoughts and prayers on our behalf. Life is a twisty stream and its always an adventure to see what's around the next bend. Thank you to ya all for your good advice! Keep smiling if ya can.

Considering the circumstances it was probably a wise decision. WE can all give our opinions from afar but staying out of the middle of a fight always seems like a good option.
I'm sure some other opportunity will come along and you will be glad you weren't tied down with the other deal.

leanin H, sorry the 'deal' wasn't right for your family. You are a wise person to be at peace with your decision. It sometimes is pretty hard to 'listen' when we are getting 'advice' from On High that is contrary to what we want. Prayers will continue for you and your family. Hope you are getting some nice weather.

We have had a few warm days and water is flowing, as well as sinking in. With the snow cover we had, a slow thaw really recharges our native grass pastures. We still hope most of the snow will be gone, and it is except on north slopes, before we get more snow predicted in a few days. I went to fetch and transport a grandson who had vehicle troubles this morning, and he remarked what a beautiful day it was yesterday. Our crew was weighing and sorting calves to have more even sizes in the various pens in our back grounding lot and it was a long day. It made this grandma feel good to hear a guy in his mid twenties so appreciative of doing hard work in muddy conditions seeing the beauty of the day.

Good that you were paying attention to the red flags, 'H. There is one thing I have learned....."when in doubt, DON'T." You are right,
the good Lord has other plans for you. Takes a big man to say, "God didn't have this in the plan for us." You are a big man and God
will continue to bless you. These things come in HIs time, not ours.

Well nobody has ever accused me of being wise before! Not sure how I feel about that? :D :D :D

I met with these folks again today. I sure feel sorry for them. Pretty sad to see the pure hatred between brothers. I did offer to help feed the cattle til they get them sold as there in now a restraining order keeping the brother with the cows from being able to be at his dad's place where the cattle are. The other brother is being evicted by his parents from a cabin he lives in on their place. Its worse than any soap opera I'd imagine. Sadly, they are making life hell for their parents who sure don't deserve this mess. Its the worst possible way for a family farm/ranch to be destroyed. Breaks my heart. If I was ever to act like this, please come to the desert and kick my butt!
