Japan decides more study is needed before reopening its market to U.S. beef

by John Gregerson on 8/25/2005 for Meatingplace.com

Japan needs to study further the potential risk of imported American beef being infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy before reopening its markets to the product, Japan's Food Safety Commission decided Wednesday.

A FSC special panel evaluated so-called "worst-case scenarios" involving the chances of importing BSE-adulterated American beef, according to panel spokesman Eisaku Kikuchi, who added that opinions among the panel varied widely on the question of lifting the ban of U.S. beef imports.

Panelists decided they needed to evaluate potential risks further before recommending that the ban be lifted.

"It's anybody's guess," Kikuchi replied when asked when the ban would be lifted.
