First ride on the ATV today, while we moved cows around,,,she was a little scared at first...but I think she kind of liked it after awhile...she didn't fall off..that's a good thing...lol

She definatly seems to have the eye the way shes circling the cattle...yup I think with training shes going to be really a good cattle dog :)

Is she not to young to start cows? We were told by the breeder we should wait till our dog was at least 1 and a half before she was to go with the cows! So she would know all her commands! We didnt do that with our first cattle dog and now hes a bad chaser most of the time and only listens some of the time! But i could be wrong

I let my 5 month old pup- Jessy come along and help with moving some yearling heifers...She did a great job of following Jud (her daddy) and when I called them back, she came back good- when I'd point him over one way, she'd follow...

She already wants to herd- goes to the heels...I have her educated now that she can't come in the corral, unless I call her...Does pretty good with her "stay"-- but needs a little more work on her "down"- and hates working on a leash or rope...
I've also got her taught that you don't follow the feed truck or go out in the cows, now that they are calving- unless you are called...

She's a little young yet, as I usually don't start them on anything until they are at least 6 months- but she's learning so fast- and is so agressive that I'm taking the chance that she won't get that scared out of her if she has a bad run-in, but I'm also not going to put her on cows or in a place where she has much chance of getting in trouble..
And all my cows are pretty much "dog-broke"...

Oh I agree not to push em to hard to fast...I knew these 2 bulls were easy going and we had plenty of room to follow up behind....also I didn't let her off the ATV to herd the older cows just for the fact they will turn on a dog. I won't put her in a situation I don't think she can handle for awhile. She does go with me every morning in the cake truck and she snaps at the cows through the pickup window. I've got alot more work to do on commands before she's ready, but damn...she's fun to work with...lol

sounds to me like you are doing the right things with her
she looked confident following those bulls
although i don't agree with you on her riding the fourwheeller through the cows but i wouldn't ride one of those things at all if i can help it lol
she's a cute pup i hope she turns out to be a great dog for you
until later

They way that she is circling wide is awesome. Put her on some smaller cattle to get the basics and she will do a great job for you!! Best of luck.

Once you get her going you'll wonder why you didnt use dogs more often.

Oh we do use dogs all the time...My hubby's little border Jade is an awesome dog...she's one of those that knows what's gonna happen before it actually happens...

I'm impressed with Jazzy's natural instinct...she's always trying to herd the cats around too. We've got alot of adventures ahead I'm sure...

LOL How well do independent minded cats take to being herded ?
PS that's such a cute pup.

Jassy, Jazzy - looks like you are both gonna have a very exciting summer ahead of you. She's a cutie. As the pictures were downloading, and I got to the one of her on the ATV, I wondered, "What about Jade" that's her spot....if Jazzy falls off, it'll be cuz Jade pushed her LOL. Keep us updated with pictures :D Mine also loves ridin the 4wheeler.
