Local Dealer has a used John Deere 13 FT. Discbine with pivot swing . Wondering if any one that has one what they like or don't like about the machine. My Hesston is getting a little Long in the Tooth if ya know what I mean :-) The JD is 4 years old and in not bad shape. Dealer says it needs new Turtles  :???:

if you replace the turtles, make them do the lifters and re seal the main bearings.....when the turtles are gone, it means dirt is getting into the seal area... and you better get new skids.

rotaries are great, but replacing a bit here and a bit there is horrid. do it all at once.

cowzilla,

You got any stones over your way? We tried a Brand new NH Discbine two years ago and it jsut wouldnt stand up to the lil stones we have. So i bought anohter sickle bar haybine.

they are a great machine...i have 946 and can cut a quarter in about 9-10 hours. Its an amazing machine...Do you put up a lot of grass or alfalfa? Discbinds work the best in stemmy crop like alfalfa. Or taller crp grass hay or something. If you do put up quite a bit of grass and if its not a very thick crop, it will not cut very good. Only way to make it cut pretty good is keep fresh blades on it if the grass is thiner. The maintenance is exceptional on one. Changing blades takes about half hour or so and ive had blades do over 1000 acres and were still cutting fine. But like someone said, ive also heard that those smaller rocks dont go good with them. Just curious what kind of money are they looking at it?

new holland has come out with a rock blade...kind of looks like a rainbow.... they also have a serrated blade we REALLY like

Got rubber crimper rollers in it?

We use a couple of 9 ft. JD Moco's and those rollers get expensive if you ever have to replace them..

We looked into discbinds and the one dealer said we wouldn't be happy because our hay wasn't thick enough. He sold some in our area and they all come back and traded them for a sickle bar. We went with another haybine.

have a cold one

I don't have stones but we have a good supply of Moles. I grow mostly Alfalfa Timothy combination and cut greenfeed. This machine I'm looking at has Flails instead of rollers and I was told this might not be all that great for greenfeed as it would peel off the grain. The Discbine also has shear hubs but don't know how reliable they are. What do you guys think?

rotary machine is the best for moles....blows right through them. shear hubs are a safety built in so if you hit something solid one hub blows up and not the whole cutter bar.

we hit a pivot bridge running 2700 RPM at 13 MPH...... 4 hours had us up and running. I thought that was pretty good, being the first time I ever took it apart....

we run the rubber rollers. the two guys I know running flail get along ok, but it is a constant job of adjusting the flail speed. it will make silage out of hay if you do not watch it close.......I would not own a flail. steel rollers seem to me to be the best resale is the only reason we run rubber.
