Johanns Focused On Resolving Trade Situations With Japan

Feb 6, 2006 4:58 pm

If you look beyond the recent beef trade incident with Japan, the last month has been full of progress toward reopening export markets to U.S. beef. That's what U.S. Ag Secretary Mike Johanns said when he addressed the Cattle Industry Convention in Denver. Johanns pointed out partial beef trade has been restored with some key markets, including Mexico, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Citing the results of USDA's Expanded BSE Surveillance Program, Johanns said USDA is positive the U.S. herd is healthy. He said more than 600,000 animals have been tested, resulting in the discovery of just one BSE case.

Japan's reinstated beef ban, according to Johanns, is a temporary setback. He said USDA will work expeditiously to complete FSIS and OIG investigations and implement the necessary recommendations. Johanns insisted USDA will do everything it can to get beef trade back on track with Japan, while avoiding sanctions if possible.

"Temporary Setback?" It's been "temporary" for over two years now.
