Okay, I fell of the edge of a very busy world sometime the middle of November with a number of shows/book signings, a full time job, and a trip to Texas over Thanksgiving and then by golly it was NFR and Christmas time --and I'm still about three laps behind but I don't recall EVER being caught up so if I'm missing something, I don't know it.
NENM Rancher...was nice to meet you
--always knew who you were by name, as in your real name through the NM Cattle Growers, but not by face -- nice to have both now.
Taos Muncy is our kid from here in this county (a ranch about 45 miles down the road from me) and I've known his parents since before he was born ...and in my job, I have followed the lad through HS rodeo with articles covering the local kids during each HS rodeo season--his senior year he racked up 13 + all around titles...he's a four eventer (bares, broncs, team roping and calf roping) --then --and now in college with a scholarship to Panhandle State University in Goodwell, OK. He's a junior.
He has done well in college and then this year won the National college saddle bronc title, and now this. He is only the third guy ever to win both in the same year. He is 20 years old.
And he is the first Saddle Bronc rider EVER from NM to win a world title (we seem to raise ropers like Jake Barnes and Guy Allen and that Cooper bunch! etc.)-- We are just bustin' our buttons proud of him and mostly because he's such a good kid, ranch raised, real deal. Polite, humble and in my book, deserving. He told me tonight by phone that he was headed down the hall to the lockers when someone stopped him and told him he'd won the title...he had NO IDEA. "I just went there to ride 10 horses as good as I could," he said.
Never did he think it would end this way.
What's next after you've done that all so quickly? I look for him to add an event or two and make a run at the all around, a Bill Linderman award and maybe revive a little Phil Lyne history. Whatever he does, he'll be fun watching.
Billy Etbauer's dad hunted up the Muncy's one of the nights Taos has won a go round and he too told them Taos has the same try he saw in his boys. It was incredibly high compliment and they were so honored.
Sure made staying up late more fun for us here in NM....
