knife or band

We knife cut the bull calves. In the picture below, the calf has horns. Our main plan is to eliminate horns by using polled bulls. Some of the commercial bulls I purchase do have horns in their background, so occasionally a calf is born with horns. I used to dehorn all the calves with paste at tagging time, but that was time consuming and hard to accomplish in bad weather. The first priority now is just to get them tagged with numbers corresponding to their mother's number. For a few years, we tried to dehorn at branding time, but that is also kind of a time-consuming hassle. Dehorning at branding time often leaves little stubs that continue growing. We don't get many horns anymore, but now it just seems easiest and most effective to dehorn in September when we give preconditioning vaccinations. By then it is easy to determine if the horns are for real or just scurs, and when they are off, they are off for good.
