Opening exercises for another branding. With a total of four inches of rain so far this spring, it looks now like there will be enough grass
to run these late calvers. At one time they were for sale.

Peach invented a scarecrow to keep calves from going by. Grandma-type supplies came in handy for the project.

I see there was a single foot in one of the pictures. Yours or his? You ought to be using your new horse for that kinda stuff.

Once in a great while, a calf kicks just right and frees one foot (after they are on the rack). We just have to improvise and proceed as best we can. They never go up on the rack unless both feet are in the loop. Kicking out doesn't happen very often, but occurs more with the very smallest calves due to their lighter weight.

My new horse lost condition immediately after I bought him. At the time we had no grass, and he was on the same "best we had" hay that our other horses were eating and thriving on. He probably needs work done on his teeth, but at least his condition is picking up since he's been turned out on grass.

Thought you didn't like dogs? Your fence dog seems pretty handy. We have a close relative but we keep him in the house when we are working cattle. :D

Soooo tell about the new horse!
Kosmo must really like the roan cuz that's about all he rides. That horse
has drug a pile of calves this year.

Sure glad you didn't have to sell any cattle. We heard of one rancher
that hauled 400 head of cows to the sale ring a few days ahead of the
sale to be processing. It started raining so
he went in and hauled them all home. :D

He's a nice horse, but sure lost condition to the tune of about 150 pounds. He is picking up now that he's out on grass, but still probably needs work done on his teeth.

Roany dragged quite a few calves to the fire this spring, but only half of them. Ol' Goose dragged the other half, plus having to pack an old fat feller while doing it.

Hope the rancher who hauled the 400 pairs back home, will later look at the deal and be glad he did it.

I hope so too! It sure cost him for giving them a ride to and fro.

I like the looks of your new horse. Have you ridden him yet? He looks to be about 5, just guessing. What about the nice buckskin that you bought a couple years ago that was to be Peach's horse? You bought a sorrel at that
time too. What did you do with him, if you don't mind me asking. :D

The buckskin got sick last winter, but is doing well now. The sorrel is out in the pasture and looking good. My Polaris Ranger is really getting to be a good mount, and is quite handy and speedy, too.

This tells about the new horse back when I first acquired him:

Don't know how I missed that thread. He sure does seem like a nice horse.
Are you going to get his teeth checked since he lost so much weight? He looks like a handy size, too! It's so good that we can get their teeth worked on. I sometimes wonder with all the heads in the air, mouths open deal that goes on in some of those old westerns, if those horses had teeth problems or just rider problems.    I know we sure didn't realize horses could have problem teeth for years.
