I have a mill going into a 20' round, and the ice is 10" or 12" thick. I have wished I'd put an 8' inside it where the bulls could water. Small tank & lots of cattle is the best set up. My cows have a small tire tank on a float that works good. Maybe I'll try to post a pic of that.

Do you ever have to bank the riser and lead pipe to keep them from freezing? I always did that in your country. Here our wells are 150 to 200 feet deep, so we drill a small hole in the pipe about 8 feet below surface so that the pipe drains. I wondered if your neighbor had his riser wrapped with gunnysack?
