Eight Mexican Wolves Die Following Recapture After Cattle Depredations

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that eight members of a pack of reintroduced Mexican wolves found to be responsible for a series of cattle depredations in Arizona died this week following efforts to recapture them. The Service will conduct an internal review of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the wolves.

The Service made the determination to recapture all members of the Hon Dah pack on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation last month after the White Mountain Apache tribe requested their removal in the wake of seven confirmed and four probable livestock depredations on tribal lands in Arizona since June 7, 2005. An agreement signed by the Service and the Tribal council allows the tribe to request removal, by lethal take or other methods, of wolves found to be involved in livestock depredations on the reservation.

All wolves in the Blue Range Recovery Area, including those on the White Mountain Apache Tribal Reservation, are part of a non-essential experimental population (NEP). This designation allows the Service greater flexibility to manage wolves under the provisions of the Endangered Species Act. Permanent removal, either by capture or lethal means, is an option permitted by the NEP designation and established by the Final Rule and Standard Operating Procedures governing the Mexican wolf management program following three confirmed livestock deaths.

"The loss of these wolves is a blow to the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program and everyone who is working to recover wolves in the Southwest. We are currently reviewing our capture practices, animal handling and pup placement procedures to determine whether these deaths could have been prevented, and to ensure that any necessary measures are taken to reduce the chance of this happening again," said Benjamin Tuggle, acting Regional Director for the Service's Southwest Region.

The Hon Dah pack numbered two adults, three yearlings and seven pups. In a series of unprecedented events, an adult female, a male yearling and six wolf pups died following capture. A male yearling was successfully captured and transported to the wolf facility at Ladder Ranch in New Mexico.

Six of the seven four-week old pups were captured on Friday, May 19, examined by a veterinarian and then transported to the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge Mexican Wolf Facility. The pups were placed with a surrogate pair of wolves with two pups in the hope that the pair would care for the captured pups. Although the male from this pair had been successfully used as a surrogate in the past, in this instance the male killed the six captured pups in an instinctive effort to protect his own two pups.

The pack's alpha female was captured late Sunday, May 21 and sustained a minor injury to her foot. She was then transported to the Alpine Arizona Mexican Wolf Field Office where she was carefully monitored throughout the night. She appeared to be alert and healthy; however, she was found dead early Monday morning prior to a veterinary examination and transport to Sevilleta. Necropsies will be performed on the first captured yearling and on the alpha female to determine cause of death.

Following the removal operations, only two of the Hon Dah Pack wolves currently remain free – the alpha male and a yearling of unknown gender. The Mexican Wolf Field Team is working to remove those remaining wolves.

The Service estimates that there are currently 32 to 46 Mexican wolves, not including pups, in the wild in portions of Arizona and New Mexico.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System, which encompasses 545 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas. It also operates 69 national fish hatcheries, 64 fishery resources offices and 81 ecological services field stations. The agency enforces federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign and Native American tribal governments with their conservation efforts. It also oversees the Federal Assistance program, which distributes hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment to state fish and wildlife agencies. Hey, ranchy...I got an idea :!: :!: Let's "reintroduce" these wolves into the back yard of this Benjamin Tuggle fella!!! See how he likes it when he fears for his pets and his way of life!! Nothing more irritating then having to hear the opinions of those folks who DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE AROUND THESE ANIMALS voicing thier "opinions" about how they "belong" here!!! Great....next stop WASHINGTON D.C......CENTRAL PARK....CHICAGO...LOS ANGELES!! Coming soon to a neighborhood near you....the wolf!!

Now now, Illinois does have Wolves in Chicagoo.. Sure it is a minor league Hockey team but they are better than the other one in town, the Backhawks

I think you will be seeing Wolves in Illinois soon enough...The pack in Minni and the UP of Michigan and Wisconsin is nothing to sneeza at... Have had a few wolves killed in this state so far and it is only the beginnig... It will be interesting to see how the pols react if/when they show up in the burbs of Chicago... There is habitat there for a pair here and there believe it or not.

Wouldn't that be fun to see

Not to mention our roadkill fed Coyotes are about as big as a wolf... Okay, not really but they are bold SOBs...

I lived outside Chicago when the coyotes starting moving in and it was utter panic for a while. Pets being snatched off back porches, calls for extermination and the like... It was kind of silly at the time (Well, i thought it as and we lived in an area where the yotes had been for years) but people were genuinely concerned and I guess if your 6 pound dog gets turned into yote poop you have every right to be upset... But thinking back at that time people will go nuts if/when wolves actually do start showing up... Guarentee it...

Alberta has some wolves we can sell you, cheap :D J/K

That wouldn't be the FIRST time we bought wolves from Canada
Mrs. Greg. Aren't we just stupid!

BMR confirmed it when I mentioned that I always thought the
Canadians were rolling on the ground laughing at us BUYING
their wolves. (not that I would blame them one bit~I would do the
same.)

I remember saying to Greg when I had heard, these wolves had been bought from Alberta to U.S.A....the Americans are going to hate us for that! Could not figure out why anybody would want them enough to pay the crazy price that was paid for them! I've since gathered it was bunny huggers that wanted them reintroduced..... Truly do feel bad every time I read a post about the wolves and the havic they cause.

Five years ago the CO DOW contacted all the ranchers in our area and asked us not to shoot any large dogs on our places, they really would like to have a few of their wolves survive. They did this without hearings, notice, or studies.

I don't think a single large dog running free survived the year. The 3S rule prevailed, not one of us shot anything except large German Shepherds. They probably won't release more without collars on soon.

I remember when this happened with the whole "reintroduction" of the "yellowstone" wolf......with the outrageous price-tag and the anger of all the area ranchers, I could imagine you Canadians sitting back, shaking your heads at the stupidity of some of us south of your border!! However, we do not hate you folks north!! We know that it was the bureaucratic BS that brought these animals to our land....NOT you citizens!! Take care and have a super day!!

I'll never forget standing around a bar in Buffalo,Wyoming and having a couple local yokels start complaining about paying 250,000 a p[iece for our no good Canadian wolves-my buddy looked him in the eye and said "We sure as hell don't sell our good wolves that cheap." Too funny.

omaha,ne has cougars show up in backyards why not wolves. according to ia & ne dnr the cougars migrated from wyoming & colorado, so its just a matter of time before the wolf makes it to ia :!:

Boy 'Little Red Riding Hood' must of scarted the ever living crap out of you guys when you were kids lol. Just whistle in the dark-it works up here where we really have lots of wolves.
