Just another day on the Soapweed Outfit

pics look good Soapweed!! What was the temp there today? It has been a cool few days around here for calving. Weve had two sets of twins in the last two days and 8 other single babies. The barn is full of new babies and momas but weve got to make sure the calves are well dried off before we can put them outside. It was -37C with the windchill last nite and this morning. I was outside every hour last nite making sure I was staying ahead on the newborns and getting them and there momas to the heated barn.

Curiousity compels me to ask, and I ain't looking for a fight, or disagreeing with your methods, but if your temps are like that normally, why don't you calve when it is warmer. Or are these temps unusual? Just wondering. :???:

Jinglebob, I know your question was intended for Manitoba _ Rancher, but I'll take a run at it anyway. Wasn't it you that said "a bad day cowboying is better than a good day doing anything else"? One thing about it, and you can ask Saddletramp or Peach Blossom to verify it, but we are getting in our fair share of time in the saddle. If we waited until June when the weather is always "perfect" :???: , the cows would just be turned out in large lush green pastures, there would be no work to calving, and then we'd have to buy a four-wheeler so we could just drive around and watch the new babies come. The way we do it, in the cold of March, we get to play cowboy even if we have to wear bib overalls and ear-flappers. :-)

We calve the embryo transfer cows earlier as the embryos in them are for bull sellers. I guess we calve in March to give them that extra bit of growing time and here in the Nebraska Sandhills it's just as apt to be bad weather in April. The problem with June calving here would be that the summer pastures are so massive trying to check them when they are where the feed is. :?

We've added some fall calving to our operation and calved them in August and September and we ran in to some problems with heat then. :?
