Killing my Thyroid ?

Back in august I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. I've been on pill's and they were helping with the symptoms but they aren't going to cure me. The doc says my next option is to take Radioactive Iodine to kill my thyroid gland.

My question to you fine folk's is have any of you had this procedure or know of someone who has ? I just want to know if it's possible to feel normal the rest of my life, after I kill my thyroid it will make me hypothyroid, sluggish and maybe gain weight. Lord know's I need all my ambition.

Sorry for the long post and any knowledge on the subject would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had a coworker, in Kansas, that had his burned out. He was always a hyper feller. As the boss called him a fart in the skillet. After his thyroid treatment, he was a lot of fun to be around. Kinda mellowed him out, and he started putting wieght on.

I've had mine done that same way in 2007 and I feel fine. As far as the weight gain, I've pretty much been a 'prosperous doing' person most of my life. :P You just have to watch what you eat, of course. Anyway, having it done is better than the alternative (Graves Disease) and it's not painful at all. When I had mine done, I didn't have to take any meds for about 2 years. The doctors keep track to see when you need to start medication.

Good luck!

Thank's for the info Faster horses, it makes me feel a little better already. I to have always been a 'prosperous doing' person, which I found your wording to be absolutely hilarious  This Graves is the best way I've ever lost weight, but I'ts the only good thing I can say about it.
I only know 1 person that has taken the RAI, that was 30 year's ago and he say's he feel's fine. When I asked him how his ambition level was he just told me that he never really had any ambition anyways. Before I got my med's I had a few week's where it felt like my insides were going a thousand miles an hour but I could hardly get off my butt to do anything. I think that's my biggest fear.

Thanks guy's

I haven't been diagnosed with Graves but do have an enlarged Thyroid. The doctor has me get a thyroid function test done once in awhile and an ultrasound to check for change in size ect. My oldest daughter has enlarged thyroid as well. Guess it runs in the family.
Wishing you the best of luck in what ever you decide to do. Do they ever remove the thyroid with surgery? or is the radioactive iodine the only way?

My friend has had his removed but he worked for the government so hard to tell if it affected his ambition.

Surgery is not really an option I guess unless a person has cancer on the gland, kind of risky with a person's vocal cord's. I have a nodule on the left side, the biopsy was today. I'm positive It's not cancer, if it was they would remove the gland.

I guess if you called it a disease, it'd be one of the best ones to have. Painless to treat. The procedure to 'kill' the thyroid was nothing. I did lose
weight before I found out there was a problem and then I found it out through the Health Fair in our town. I had some other symptoms, but didn't even realize it. Hair, fingernails, etc. I have a lot of nodules in my neck. When I'd go in for a checkup, my doctor would check my neck with his hands and say, "Did anyone ever tell you that you have lumps in your neck?" And we'd laugh........

Since I had lost weight, I did ask if I could just keep my hyperthyroid...   But he said no.

You'll be just fine and if we helped you to feel better about it, well, that's good. Let us know how it goes.

my grand mother had it taken care of with radiation pills....she lived to be 90...... it is genetic, so be sure your kids get checked.

my sister is now getting ready for the same treatment.....

like everything else, watch it, treat it, and take care of yourself.... do the best you can.....

grandma told us once that all this medicine and doctors is a scam...no one lives for ever!

Thank's again guy's you've helped me quite a bit. I didn't want to ask on here but I can't find any honest information on the web. It seems like for every 1 person that has had no ill effects there are 12 that say its the worst thing they have done to their body, with lots of bad side effects later in life.

I knew I would get some good honest info on here!
