KSU Kicking Some Texas Butt!!!!!

When I said they had paid the fare for the entire Big 8, that meant that OU and NU had shared millions of dollars with the other 6 schools, allowing them to have the funds to hopefully better their programs and be as competitive as they could be. The Nebraska strength and training program was open at that time so other schools could see what we were doing and help them to begin their own strength and conditioning programs. We were more than happy to share what we were doing with the world. The summer before I began my freshman year some of the Baylor coaching staff came to Lincoln for a couple of weeks to observe how we did things.

The remnants of the old Southwest conference came to the Big 8 with their hat in their hands looking for a home, and the Big 12 was formed. I don't know how Texas became the supreme superior commanding officer of the Big 12, calling all the shots, but they did. Texas is the school with the sharing problem, not NU. I can understand that with over 60 million in profits that they might not want to share the wealth, but sharing it would grant them more positive PR than they could ever buy. But maybe now their proposed TV network might only be a pipe dream.

The Huskers have never backed off from sharing revenue with the other schools, and I'm quite sure that revenue sharing allowed some schools to afford things they might otherwise not have been able to purchase solely with their own revenues, hence my dig at Jigs.

In the case of Kansas, football profits were 4.34 million in the study, while KU basketball made a profit of 7.51 million, which combined is about one sixth of the profit Texas made on football alone, or not quite one third the profit Nebraska made on football.

 I did not know that they had the water boy doing conditioning training.

Not him...the kid who kept Coach Osborne supplied with gum had to be the most in-shape guy in the stadium! It's quite a run from the stadium to a 7-11!

Football "Bowl" revenue is not the only source of income for a conference.

One of the largest sources is the NCAA Basketball Tourney.

KSU has been to the "Big Dance" 24 times vs. the Huskers 6.

They have been to the Final Four 4 times vs. 0 for the Huskers.

This is just one example.

Mike,

Basketball revenue, NCAA Tourny or not, is just a drop in the bucket compared to the money football brings in. When it comes to realignment it isn't even a consideration. Just as an example, the most successful basketball program last year (financially) was North Carolina, which brought in 16 million. Their football program, not exactly a national powerhouse, brought in 70 million. That's why Kansas almost got left out in the cold last summer. Their tradition and success in basketball means nothing when it comes to conference realignment. It's all about the money and that means it's all about football.

As an outsider, I'm throwing the BS flag that Nebraska and/or Oklahoma has totally supported the KSU athletic program. Unless someone can come up with some real facts and figures to substantiate it.

As an outsider myself, I don't know about that. But the fact is that the 'have nots" are dependent on the "haves" and the "haves" are the schools with the perennially successful football programs. It's the same in every conference. That's why the only two teams the Big Ten has brought in over the last 60 years are both football schools. That's why they want Notre Dame so bad they can taste it.

Do you think Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana, or even my beloved Illinois could survive on their own without the revenue that Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan bring in? I don't. Well, maybe they'd survive, but they wouldn't be able to field nearly as many other sports as they do now. Heck, Nebraska didn't join the Big Ten because they thought they could win more championships. They won't, and they know it. They joined because The Big Ten, mainly because they have their own TV network, brings in more revenue than any other conference and everyone shares equally. Win or lose, they will make more money than they are now.

Here's an interesting little article I found the other day:

http://uwire.com/2010/06/23/column-football-revenue-trumps-basketball-tradition/

In case you missed it, here's a quote:

Kansas and the other four schools that were under threat of being left behind, took matters into their own hands. Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, Iowa State and Missouri pledged to Beebe that, should Texas, Oklahoma or Texas A&M not reach the money guaranteed them by other conferences, the left-behind five would pool together and make up the difference between promised and actual revenue.

In other words, the "have nots" are so dependent on the "haves", and were so terrified that they might leave them out in the cold, that they actually agreed to pay them to stay. Amazing. I guess it goes back to the old saying "Ya gotta spend money to make money."

That would explain exactly why so many schools have dropped so many sports from their programs. And it also explains why Nebraska still has wrestling, gymnastics, etc. Back in my day they had rugby, crew, archery, shooting, etc., etc., to my knowledge all paid for by football revenue. The only collegiate sport back then that Nebraska had that was totally on it's own, that I ws aware of, was the rodeo team. Some years a car dealership MIGHT furnish a new crew cab dually, and a trailer dealership MIGHT furnish a trailer, but that was the end of it. If the club had money we would authorize some gas money for the extra long trips like to River Falls or Dickinson. Soap has a neighbor to the east who should have a doctorate in how to travel and live cheap.
