LABELING COULD SETTLE HORMONE DISPUTE

DENMARK: Agriculture Commissioner says that labeling hormone treated beef could resolve long-running dispute between U.S. and E.U.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

American hormone-treated beef could be allowed onto the European market if it is labeled.

Speaking to MeatNews at the Foss Meat Conference in Billund, Denmark, European agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said that labeling could be the answer to the long-running dispute between the E.U., U.S., and Canada.

The dispute between the two sides over the safety of hormone-treated beef is to be heard by the World Trade Organisation Disputes panel later this month and next.

Mrs. Fischer Boel, who was speaking at the meat conference in Denmark, told MeatNews that although the question was not covered by her department, her personal view was that labeling U.S. beef as having been reared using hormones was a way out of the dilemma, if the disputes panel decision went against the E.U.

She said that the original dispute had been over the use of six different hormones, and one had already been declared unsafe and had been withdrawn.

"The decision of the disputes panel has to be based on science," Mrs. Fischer Boel said. "Should we be forced to accept the imports, we could then have a labeling system. Labeling is the only possible way to inform the consumer, but it is a possible way."

'Tain't that hard. All one needs to do is a test on the liver - any artificial growth hormones administered during the animal's life will show up.

It's worth the extra cost because when the Europeans do random testing and find AGH residue they simply refuse the whole shipment and leave the stuff sitting on the dock in whatever port it arrived at. A bit of an expense for someone on the west side of the Atlantic to deal with.

Labels have to be enforceable.

You R-CULTERS refuse to ID your cattle to make "M"COOL enforceable.

The ultimate in hypocrisy.

"Don't consumers have a right to know where their beef comes from.......don't burden me with traceback". FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP!

Yes, he IS so predictable.

OCM: "The USDA is enforcing MCOOL for Korea without ID."

Give me the specifics on what Korea is requesting and let's compare that to the "born, raised, and processed in the US" designation of "M"COOL shall we?

Who the hell do you think you're kidding this time OCM?

Why don't you throw out Leo's "school lunch program" comparison so I can tamp that for you?

Damn deceivers! No wonder you hide behind your aliases.

All Korea has to do is buy from plants that don't process cattle from Canada or Mexico...unless cattle are swimming the Atlantic and then heading for a local slaughterhouse.

The EU destined cattle would have to be traced so a liver sample or whatever the standard for testing can be determined. I doubt they'll take a signature with no way to check on its validity based on the tenacious way they have fought this battle.
