We have started looking for something to replace our Scout. It's the 'main
ranch hand' at our place. We have come across a 2004 Land Rover that is
in really good shape and priced right because the dealer thinks there is a odd
noise in the engine. It was a local trade, traded in by a lady in town and when
they told her there was an odd sound in the engine, she had no idea that it
had that odd sound. We drove it today, it's in very, very good shape and Mr.
FH listened to the engine. It didn't make any odd noises until it got warmed up
and then it did. He said it didn't sound like anything deep in the engine, more
like lifters. It has good power and everything works except the cruise control.
I looked online and what I found is that they are expensive to buy and expensive
to fix. We only would use it for the ranch and for him to drive to town for parts.
We wouldn't put many miles on it--right now it has 98,000. It is priced about
half of what the NADA Blue Book says and we got the feeling they would like
to get rid of it. We had a price in mind that we would offer, but told him we
wanted to research it more first. Also, there is no dealership close. We talked
to a fellow that has a shop and he says he can fix them but that the parts
are expensive...which we already knew. It's such a dandy little outfit and perfect
for how we would use it. So, do any of you know anything about the Land
Rover Discovery SE? The dealer thought Ford owned them in 2004, it
has a V8 engine.

Thanks for any replies.

One of the Village Idiots here has one. He's in so deep with it and at his age he'll never live long enough to drive what he has invested out of the rig.

Do what you please. Personally, I'd run like hell away from it.

Look for an older model Ford Explorer (Exploder). The die hard Scout fans are now replacing their Scouts with the Exploders, and are pretty happy with the change.

I'm the only Land Rover around here, if its got that many miles on it don't even think about it.
Good luck

kind of a love/hate relationship, mostly hate. parts are expensive and availability is an issue.

Thanks for that link, hayguy. Sure too bad there are so many issues with it.
I thought by 98,000 the bugs would be worked out of it. :? Doesn't sound
that way. It's such a fun outfit, but common sense (along with the comments
posted above) tells us to stay away from it. Who needs to buy a problem,
especially when you've been warned. :P

Mr. FH says the motor isn't as noisy as the Scout motor and he's continued
to run the Scout with no problems. (he says the Scout noise is just
lifters~) but the Scout has developed an oil leak. Well, guess what? The Land
Rover has an oil leak as well.

I think the real reason he has been watching for something else is because he
has hunting buddies from Washington state and the one who doesn't hunt
has to ride in the back seat of the Scout and he gripes about it every day.
He's a pretty tall drink of water with bad knees, and there isn't a lot of room in the back seat of the Scout for him.
Since it is only a 2-door he has to fold the front seat forward to
even get in back and there's not a lot of room to get in.
These guys started hunting together 48 years ago this year,
so there's a lot more going on than dissing the room in the back seat. :P :D

Thanks for your post, Lazy WP, we'll keep that in mind. The Scout has brand new tires now, so it's a quality unit.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply.

Quite a few guy's around here are buying GMC jimmy's or Chevy blazers for their work, run around truck. usually 95 to 2005 models fairly resonable in price and relatively easy to work on. two fella's i know put a hydraulic pack in the back and use them to rake hay with V-rakes. not as a sometimes thing but as an all summer project

We have 2 '95 Nissan Pathfinders. They are pretty handy and ride good. Now it would be a Nissan Exterra that would replace them. I found a nice one but it was still pretty pricey to put in the hills.

I found A 99 Chevy Tahoe that might be worth looking at. It's $3900 before
any negotiating. Won't be as fun as the Land Rover, tho. :P

That Land Rover had two sun roofs. One in the front and one in the rear.
It was sure neat. :P  The one in the front had a dark screen
you pulled across it to block the sun. Made you feel like you were in Africa!

We've had a Scout since 1989 and Mr. FH really likes them. I'm surprised
he is looking to replace it. Actually we have 2, one for parts. :D

The right guy and some dollars could probably rebuild it like new but it would still have the same back seat. :D Unless it was CUSTOMIZED
