"So tomorrow's homework assignment, the president said, is for the congressional leaders to figure out how to get from $1.7 trillion to $2.4 trillion."

This is the amount they would increase the debt ceiling by.....
So that would be a $2.4 trillion reduction (increase in debt ceiling) over 18 months (Aug. to Feb. 2013)
or $ .13333 T per month and the existing deficit for 2011 is $1.5 trillion
.13333 x 12 = $1.6 trillion
I'm no mathematician, but would that not be an increase in the deficit?
