The livestock industry and many others are responding to the needs of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.. USDA Monday began shipping over 12 million pounds of various food, baby food and formula to affected communities….members of the LMA of Texas are working with the Texas Cattle Feeders Association and the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association to hold "special relief sales" of donated cattle at the markets. The goal is to raise $1 million by the middle of October.
USDA and the Food and Drug Administration have approved using most of a cow's small intestine, once banned as a precaution against mad cow disease, for sausage casings and in other food, as long as the end section of the organ, the distal ileum, has been removed. The FDA said "It is no longer necessary to designate the entire small intestine as a prohibited cattle material."
It's been a productive summer for adding new members, with 28 joining LMA since late June.
